German Field Marshal Erwin Rommel decides to take a few days off from his headquarters at Chateau La-Roche Guyon, Normandy and visit his wife Lucia and son Manfred for her birthday. He feels with the weather as bad as it is, the Allies will not be able to launch an invasion for several weeks.
Well, he certainly got a big surprise.
probably not a wise decision on his part.
That always happens to me when I go on vacation. (crisis, not invasion.)
Hated Hitler but not a conspirator. He got lumped in with Valkyrie. He was forced into suicide to keep his family safe.
Sorry about the cyanide and all that but hey, putting on a nazi uniform does have consequences, or at least it did in those days.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the English Channel...
Flash forward 40 years; Manfred Rommel (the Field Marshal’s son) became mayor of Stuttgart and worked closely with U.S. Army commanders in his city, including an up-and-comer named Norman Schwartzkopf.
Small world.
Manfred Rommel was also friends with Gen. George S. Patton IV, both sons of WW2 generals.
He chose poorly.
