The World's Top 10 Islands ( for culture, adventure, or simply kicking back on a beach )
Travel and Leisure ^ | 07/11/2017 | by Rebecca Ascher-Walsh

Whether you crave culture, adventure, or simply kicking back on a beach with a cold cocktail, at least one of these islands is sure to be an ideal destination.  And should you be willing to spend time in the air in order to land near the sea, all the better: this year, three of the top 10 islands in the world — as decided by Travel + Leisure readers — are in Asia.

No matter that reaching them requires a generous commitment, fiscally and temporally. For the second year in a row, the Philippine paradise Palawan wins first place as the best island in the world, thanks to its hidden lagoons, teeming ocean life, and rustic-luxe resorts. Boracay, Philippines, also makes a return appearance, as does Indonesia’s Bali, an island synonymous with dream honeymoons.

Every year for our World’s Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Readers rated islands according to their activities and sights, natural attractions and beaches, food, friendliness, and overall value.

About the Greek isles, Homer wasn’t wrong. Santorini, with its famous sunsets, has ancient ruins and seemingly endless seascapes that allow us to imagine what inspired The Odyssey. (It bumped Ischia out of the top spot on the 2016 list to again become the No. 1 island in Europe, but who can quibble about either sun-drenched spot?)

Also making the World’s Best Islands Overall list in 2017 are the Hawaiian islands of Maui and Kauai, while those who prefer their snorkeling to be on the wilder side raise their hands for the Galápagos Islands. As one reader wrote of the Ecuadorian national park made famous by Charles Darwin, “If you like to be up close and personal with amazing wildlife, this is a no-brainer.” Adds another, “This place is a miracle.”

Miraculous or just miraculously beautiful, all of these islands have this in common: vast stretches of beauty to explore by day and elegant places to hang your straw hat at night. Whatever your pleasure, you will find it here.

10. Bali, Indonesia

Score: 87.61

9. Hvar and the Dalmatian Islands, Croatia

Score: 87.75

8. Ischia, Italy

Score: 88.53

7. Kauai, Hawaii

Score: 88.72

6. Maui, Hawaii

Score: 89.17

5. Santorini, Greece

Score: 89.19

4. Galápagos Islands, Ecuador

Score: 89.20

3. Boracay Island, Philippines

Score: 89.67

2. Hilton Head Island, South Carolina

Score: 90.83

1. Palawan, Philippines

Score: 93.15

Explore Palawan Island

There’s nothing quite like immersing yourself in the natural wonders of this Philippine archipelago, which many of our readers described as “rustic,” “romantic,” “affordable,” and “relaxing.” As one fan succinctly wrote, “It’s the single most beautiful place on earth. ” Palawan, which consists of an eponymous main island, in addition to some 1,800 surrounding islets and island outposts, is a repeat winner on the list, first scoring the No. 1 spot in 2013. And with its verdant mountains, a five-mile-long underground river, limestone caves, and spectacular scuba diving, its appeal is as clear as its turquoise waters.

MONEY MAGAZINE seems to agree with Travel and Leisure regarding the Best Island to visit...

EXCERPT:

For the second year in a row and the third time since 2013, Palawan, Philippines, has won the award for best island in the world.

The long narrow Palawan island, which is located on a province of 1,780 islands, is lined with sugar-white sand beaches and hidden coves, according to its tourism website. Palawan is filled with species unique to the region, with over 200 bird species and 600 butterfly species, according to the government's website. It contains the world’s largest navigable underground river, flowing five miles under a limestone cave out to sea, which visitors can tour by canoe.

The sparsely populated island is also home to underwater shipwrecks and coral reefs filled with tropical fish that attract scuba diving or snorkeling visitors. The abundant wildlife on land and sea, as well as crystal-clear waters give Palawan breathtaking sights, especially viewed from the tops of its lush mountains.

For the magazine's annual survey, readers rated experiences across 86 categories on a secure website, and scores were averaged in order to determine the awards for 2017.

2. Hilton Head Island, South Carolina

I spent the summer of '86 at Hilton Head. Well, it wasn't really Hilton Head: It was the island right next to Hilton Head.

It's called Parris Island.

How far is Pelawan located from the ISIS controlled part of the Philippines? Any area that attracts American tourists in that part of the world also attracts ISIS.

Two for me——Hilton Head and Maui.

My post (although completely true) was meant as a joke.

Sometimes you will see someone wearing a Hilton Head souveneir T-shirt, and my above post was the standard line that I would use. I quit using it because I was always getting a blank stare in return: never so much as a smile.

I thought I could at least use that line on FR without getting the blank stare.

Parris Island is the USMC's east coast recruit training facility: It is not a vacation destination like Hilton Head, and the 2 islands really are separated by just a couple of miles of water.

The islands of Raiatea and Huahine in French Polynesia are also great, off the beaten path and simple. Loved it there.

The above is a map of the Philippines. Palawan is the long island ( literally ) like a snake WEST of the country. The best parts to go to is the NORTH of the island where you will find some of the most pristine waters in the world.

Muslim problems occur way SOUTH of the country ( see color code ).

RE: I have a Filipino friend that recommended I visit Boracay.

Yes, definitely worth visiting just for the water adventures, the beautiful beaches, and the great night life.

I have the map of thePhilippines in Post #19 above. Boracay is right smack in the middle of the Philippines in the province of Aklan ( you can see it in the map in dark white).
