Sea Princess cruise passengers spend 10 days in blackout for fear of pirates

1,900 passengers aboard a 104 day cruise around the world got an unsettling surprise after they departed from Sydney, Australia toward Dubai.

For ten days, the passengers had to endure a mandatory dusk-to-dawn blackout for fear of pirate attacks. “No deck parties, no movies under the stars, no late-night outdoor bar hopping or pool dipping” were just some of the bans included in the blackout ordered by Captain Gennaro Arma, recalls Carolyn Jasinski, a passenger on the ship. The ship essentially become a ghost – all curtains were drawn, all lights were dimmed or turned off.

Arma wanted to remind his crew and his passengers that the threat of pirates “was real and the ship must be prepared for a pirate attack.”

Jasinski says that in addition to the blackout, there were obligatory pirate drills to prepare the crew and passengers in case an actual attack happened.

“[The passengers] were advised to sit on the floor and to hang on to hand rails in case the ship had to maneuver away from pirate ships. In the case of a real threat, those passengers in outside cabins were told to close and lock their balcony doors, then lock their entrance door to their cabin and take shelter in the corridors,” she says in her essay detailing the experience.

Muzzies win again. Humans bowing down to muzzies in abject submission. They won. We lost.

I’m looking a bayou right now, a few guy working on their boats, a guy cleaning fish, a a few big skiffs getting ready to for shrimping.

There may be a gator or two on the other side, but I’m gonna leave them alone.

And we well fry top a bunch of our catch for dinner.

Very interesting. Israeli soldiers protected your cruise ship while passing Yemen. Can you tell a little more about this? What country operated the ship?

Contrast this with the cruises that go into that area and all of the passengers are armed and waiting to knock off pirates. Which would be the most fun?

Some slick entrepaneur could really make a "killing". Stock a cruise ship with weapons and booze, and advertise the adventure of a lifetime: Cruisin' for a Brusin' with Captain Ned — Pirate hunting on the high seas!

Most of the pirates are lazy shiftless dumb as dirt Somalians anyway. The only way they get away with piracy is because their victims are unarmed girly-men afraid to fight. Chop down the Somalians rat-a-tat-tat. No great loss, plenty more where they came from.

If a ship is registered in the USA, for example

That's one of the problems. These ships are all registered in Panama. It's up to the Panama navy to defend them. The USA should have changed their laws long ago to allow the shipping companies to register their ships in the USA at a reasonable price. The money paid in registration fees to the US would buy the protection of the USN.

Of course, traveling in dangerous waters completely unarmed is also a series problem.

Yeah, I hate to see people squander a business opportunity. "Welcome aboard! Here's yer machine gun. We'll have repel boarders drills just after cocktail hour..."

Darken ship sucks, I can testify from experience, and I'd be a little concerned about liability issues from some tiddly goof taking a midnight stroll and ending up swimming. Can that actually be better than issuing machine guns to drunks?

Of course not.

I think I see a business opportunity for the Russians here. Luxury pirate hunting cruises, lots of complimentary vodka and caviar.

Starting at $30,000 for one week with his and her Kalashnikovs, going up to $100,000 for a balcony suite with 60mm flack guns. First 100 rounds included in the fare.

Includes first class air fare to and from Odessa.

Bonus: If you capture any pirates alive, you get to keel-haul them.

Why didn’t they hand out AK’s? Skeet shooting off the stern all night long. :-)

You have to assume a lot of very wealthy people were on a cruise like that.

Taking the ship hostage, demanding a huge ransom, and publicly executing some notable passengers must be on the wish list of many Muslim terrorist organizations.

I will speculate that future reservations for Indian Ocean luxury cruises are going to sink like the Titanic!

What would be really cool is to charter a cruise ship for the sole purpose of pirate hunting.

Arm every passenger with his or her choice of Barrett sniper rifles, AR15s, M60s or the newer model 7.62mm belt-fed weapon, and employ the operation of the Ma Deuce in lieu of slot machines. Post one at every corner rail.

Instead of morning yoga or whatever other lame-ass activity cruise ships offer, have morning target practice and "get to know your weapon" seminars.

Purposefully sail the ship close in to the Horn to lure them out. Deliberately search for their mother ships.

Whoever kills a pirate wins the assault rifle of his or her choice. Kill 2 pirates and win a $5,000 shopping spree at Cabela's or Bass Pro Shops.

Sink a pirate boat, win a Corvette. Sink a mothership, and you get his and hers Ferraris.

I'd pay real money for that.
