U.S. Warns Citizens About Travel to Mexico’s Los Cabos, Tijuana, Cancun as Violent Crime Surges

The State Department’s decision to warn residents about travel to the resort cities “is a reality check for the booming towns and economy of Mexico,” he said.

Mexican officials have gone to lengths to portray the country’s beach resorts as family friendly and safe. Violent incidents “are extremely rare among the millions of international tourists who visit Riviera Maya each year, and the entire tourism industry works to ensure the safety and satisfaction of all visitors,” reads a statement on the website of the Assn. of Riviera Maya Hotels.

But 10 years into the country’s military-led drug war, violence is surging across the nation. This year, Mexico is on track to record more homicides than in any year in the last two decades.

Rising demand for heroin in the U.S. and power struggles among the country’s top drug cartels, authorities say, have led to an increase in killings in 27 of Mexico’s 32 states.

In Quintana Roo, the state where Cancun is located, 169 killings were reported from January to July, more than twice as many as during the same period last year.

In Baja California Sur, home to Los Cabos and Cabo San Lucas, 232 slayings have been reported this year, nearly four times as many as during the same period last year.

Instapundit had a link to an article about this, very scary.

I had no desire to go there to begin with, but this ensures I will not get near the place.

Go on a cruise.

In the past couple of weeks, we have gotten a flood of emails and expensive mailings with great deals on so called 4 and 5 star lodges/hotels on Mexico’s west coast.

Things have gone downhill really fast in that part of the world. Between ten and twenty years ago, I spent a lot of time in both Maya Riviera and Baja California. It might have been at the tail end of a way of life, but I whiled away many blissful days camped out on isolated beaches, trading beer (or dollars) for seafood, and surfing my brains out without a care in the world. Not anymore.

Who do you think is abetting this.

Supply and demand can't be repealed. You want to stop the drugs, bomb the cartels, put troops on the border, and end the law enforcement/prison industrial complex.

We used to go to Mexico just to have some fun decades ago. It was basically friendly.

Now?

They’d have better luck juggling flaming chains saw while roller skating than talk me into going to Mehico.

We went to Cancun last fall and had a great time. I never felt we were in anypparticular danger. It’s too bad to see this.

Puerto Escondido. Loved it. Use to go every year. Felt safe.
Graffiti started to turn anti-North American. Last time did not feel safe. Don’t ever need a doctor or hospital down there. We’re never going back. Spend our vacation dollars in the U.S. where the ambulance probably doesn’t have four flat tires.

It's been dangerous for years, my daughter and her husband finally quit taking cruises down there when somebody tried to drug my SIL when they went in port.

Save your money and the trip, there are plenty of places right here in America where you can get robbed, raped or murdered by immigrants Image and video hosting by TinyPic Without spending time and money to visit their homeland.

I can’t think of a place in Mexico that I would travel to these days. I used to go scuba diving in San Carlos. I had few problems driving all over the country several years ago. I won’t set foot in Mexico ever again.
