Gizmodo ^ | Dec 5, 2017 | David Nield

Windows has been knocking around in some form or another for a grand total of 32 years now, and in that time it’s amassed a lot of features—not just the newest bells and whistles but long-standing features you might have forgotten about or never even discovered in the first place. Here are 10 really useful tricks that Windows 10 is capable of that you might not know about, but should definitely know about.

  1. Virtual desktops
  2. Video and media streaming
  3. Scheduling tasks
  4. Malware removal
  5. Reclaim lost disk space
  6. Remote assistance
  7. Share files around the house
  8. Check for missing files and disk errors
  9. Print to PDF
  10. Record screen activity

[dayglored note: This is just a list; in the article, each one is an entire section with illustrations.]

I’ve got Windows 10 at my work. It sucks. How bad does it suck? It draws vacuum.

Several of those pre-date Win10.

I have used virtual desktops since Win3.0.

I use as few Win 10 features as I possibly can, thanks to Classic Shell. Don’t need any of that crap.

How about searching contents of PDF files? Win7 does it by default. Win10 won’t even do it when you set it in the folder settings. Win10 sucks.

Malware removal just means they put in an antimalware app, so you dont have to use McAfee or Kaspersky or Norton.

Its not as useful in a large environment as McAfee for one thing (way less sophisticated for enterprise use), but it does work.

The Remote Assistance thingy is a two-edged sword. I’ve used it and it works like a champ. The problem is that the person asking you for assistance realizes that, and well...yeah. You’re a permanent HellDesk.

Just finished installing the latest update. That is a large puppy. It takes a long time, with three reboots.

I’ll tell you what would be a nice feature. It is actually an old feature that was taken away in windows 10. And that is to have windows actually shut down when you ask it too. Even with the options set for windows to shut down when you click the power button... It still goes into sleep or hibernate mode(every since the creators update). This can cause certain problems. Especially if you remove power from the computer.

Re: “How about searching contents of PDF files?”

Are they Adobe files?

If so, you may need an Adobe subscription.

My Windows 10 can search all kinds of web pages and files.

But when my lawyer sends me an Adobe document, I need the Adobe subscription to “find” and “select” and “copy and paste.”

Malware removal

Well that’s nice considering Windows 10 comes preloaded with malware.

I remember one windows box I bought that cam preloaded (by HP) with so much malware (some call it bloatware) that it took me two days to delete it all.
