I enjoyed most of the Star Wars movies, especially the earlier ones. But this one sounds too melancholy to see. I think I’ll skip this one.
Only for fanboys..
Agreed, that many people were expecting a remake of Empire. This last part of the movie with Luke was amazing and I thought this was Hamill’s best performance in the series.
I really enjoyed it and was grateful for the length.
I saw three things. The least interesting was the Finn/Rae/Rose question.
The most interesting to me was Ren’s nihilism. Not dark side, not light side, HIS side, to which he invites Rae.
Then there is the fact that, like Anakin only moreso, Rae comes from nowhere. So, that plus the loss of the “scientific” explanation of midichlorians and the frank statememt that the Jedi are a religion (also in Rogue One, with the blind, quasi-Tibetan, monk ... now we have the promise of new outcroppings, new eruptions of the force.
....
From the POV of the creators, there are so e things that have to be accomplished. The main characters, Luke, Leia, Han, of the early days, have to be wrapped up tidily. New characters have to be put forward, with new struggles.
(So Leia’s tiredness fits right in. One way or another, she’s used up.)
I have to see it again, soon. I thought I saw something at the end which MAY subtly set the theme for coming movies ... a sort of new Pentecost of the Force, to stand up to the power of Ren.
And with Ren and Rae joined (in the force) at the hip ... well, I look forward to imteresting developments. I was more than satisfied.
Completely agree with your various points. I couldn’t help but to roll my eyes multiple times during the film.
Sudden onset of “Jedi Leila”, flying through space, and not freezing? Snoke dies like a chump after all those force powers displayed? Sure. And how about those super Jedi astral projection tricks that even Yoda never performed? Now everyone is doing it!! Yay.
I could go on adding to the list, but why bother. I survived the prequels, but this is too insulting. Lol
“subplot in the film involving that same character that is also poorly written and executed.... it comes across as forced.. in fact its almost like watching one of the prequels during these scenes..”
Oh great, another Jar Jar Binks.
I think it's a tie-in between Disney and the Marvel universe... The big payday he gets from the empire allows him to begin his collection!
Mark
Actually, US sales were about 90% of foreign ticket sales, for Force Awakens.
Hamill didn’t really seem like he was enjoying it in the movie role either.
The Last Jedi is an incoherent mess of a story. The low score is well deserved.
Well, she was dead after all.
I agree. The whole idea after the earlier movies with the space battles, that this one ship could hold off those star destroyers long enough for the Finn character to sneak away from the battle, spend a night in a casino and jail, fail to find his encryptor, return and sneak back into the star destroyer (with battle still raging), just was so far from even Star Wars reality, I had to just ignore and try to pretend it was really not part of the movie I came to see. Oh, and those annoying birds which were a cross between baby penguins and puss-n-boots from Shrek....
But I did think the light speed collision scene on the big screen was AWESOME
No, not a jarjar...just poor writing and bad acting. More like Anakin from the prequels than JarJar
My son saw it the first night it opened. He said it wasnt that good. He didnt elaborate.
One must think about after marketing and Disney plans on a totally immersive resort themed after a Star Wars outpost.
I liked the film but i saw subliminal messaging in the casino scene, a message to the mommies and daddies that Disney has gambling.
Just look at their cruise ships.
And if course the toy shelves will be overflowing with porgs and crystal foxes.
I waited an hour and a half to be up front, but nobody showed up until 30 minutes before the film. Theater wasn’t crammed elbo to elbo like the last episode 9f which i saw in South Australia two years ago.
I myself really like the lightspeed jump into the Deathwing, why didn’t they ever do that before?
So in summary my thought 8s this, the movie was good but I’m bitter because i think its too suggestive towards Disney, the resort, kids and dreams, merchandise.
Ill volunteer.
Well the whole character they added to Flynn for his adventure was terrible... horribly written badly acted... don’t think anything could have saved that, other than better writing and a more capable actres.

I think the biggest overall knock I can make on this film, other than the rose character being so poorly written an acted...akin to anakin in the prequels..
Is what you pointed out... Star Wars is NOT shades of grey... it’s light and Dark... absolutely not moral uncertainty and this film clearly is bringing in relavatism and shades of grey all over the place.
In the large context of Star Wars, this is a turn off. It is like what WB attempted to do with Superman in its latest incarnation. Instead of being the absolute good he always was try to make him brooding and full of nuance.. and it’s stupid.
I was concerned when the first trailer was released with Luke saying the Jedi order must come to an end, that they might be taking it in a darksword trilogy direction to end it all, but that doesn’t seem the case.
I don’t go to a movie, even of a franchise I love, to be preached relativism... and I’m really tired of that in general... and I think Disney is at risk of long term brand damage if it keeps that tact going.
“But I did think the light speed collision scene on the big screen was AWESOME”
It was a very plot-contrived scene. The smaller (and faster) First Order ships had no reason to stay behind the dreadnaught in a straight line on the same plane (a plot device in Star Trek II Wrath of Khan). And why didn’t Leia order the Medical frigate do the same thing hours before. Or just use the ship Finn took to the casino. At the speed of light, mass is infinite. Any of the smaller ships (or a torpedo) would have done the same damage.
