Shale gas is one of the least sustainable ways to produce electricity, research finds
Science News ^ | January 16, 2018 | University of Manchester

If you knew me, and be thankful you don't, you know I am a solid supporter of science in every arena.  Which is why I find this so egregious.

The study, published in Science of The Total Environment, compared shale gas and the other electricity options against 18 sustainability indicators. Of these, 11 were environmental, three economic and four social. Examples of the indicators considered include climate change impacts, environmental pollution, costs of electricity, creation of jobs and public perceptions.
Whether local production of shale gas is even possible in the UK, its sustainability has zero to do with jobs and public perceptions.  These charlatans need to be laughed out of academia.

I think coal should be limited to metallurgical and Christmas Stocking for ‘Rats uses (though there might be other special uses).

Wow...staggering idiocy on display here...

But the researchers found that for shale gas to be considered as sustainable as the best options, such as wind and solar PV, huge improvements would be needed. This includes a 329-fold reduction in environmental impacts and 16 times higher employment in the sector.

By that employment metric, the best power generation technology would be ten million men and woman riding stationary bicycles for ten hour shifts.

For several hundred years, geniuses, inventors, and entrepreneurs have toiled to reduce man's burden and constantly strive to improve productivity. Leftists want to undo all that.

“social sustainability”

I’m guessing it means that employers will guarantee your right to meet at the water cooler every morning and afternoon to discuss yesterday’s ball scores.

What?

Shale gas?

Can’t those Brits speak English?

Mark for funnies later....

What is the going price for Unobtanium? I think that is our best future resource for energy.

Time for King Coal and scrubbers!

OR,

an advancement in technology.

Western man has had problems before, and yes, unlike the rest of the world, we can solve the problem. That is why we became the free industrialized west... and not some s-ole. Sole country. Heavy on the soul, not s-ole

shale gas ranks seventh out of the nine electricity options, which means most other options for electricity generation are more sustainable..

What are the other 8? We know they don't like coal or nuclear either. Wind and solar don't work if it's cloudy or no wind. Something tells me that their idea of sustainable is different than mine.

Precisely and fortunately the Chinese are working hard on perfecting the technology. Given the last nuclear debacle I’d have guessed Japan would be leading the way.

...it mentions biomass; the Swedes produce a significant steam and electric supply simply from burning trash.

This is another BS environmental and globull warming study.

It is pure shite.

Even though I endorse Thorium it is far off. Prehaps so far off something better will eclipse it before it gets off the ground. If it does get off the ground it will happen in India or China before it ever happens here even though they will use our research and technology.
