New research shows the most significant weakening is happening under Africa which has been dubbed the 'South Atlantic Anomaly' (SAA).
As well as giving us our north and south poles, the magnetic field blankets the Earth, protecting it from solar winds and cosmic radiation.
The forcefield has weakened significantly over the past 160 years and scientists now suggest it could be in the process of flipping.
Such a change would be a switch in magnetic polarity and would see compasses point south rather than north.
Scientists believe such an occurrence has actually happened several times in the history of our planet, transpiring roughly every 200,000 to 300,000 years.
Approximately 40,000 years ago, the field is said to have attempted to switch before snapping back into place.
The SAA, which stretches all the way from Zimbabwe to Chile, is now of particular interest to scientists because it has weakened dramatically over the last 160 years...
A new study from the University of Rochester, published... data from sites in southern Africa and compiled a record of Earth's magnetic field strength over many centuries.
They used ancient African clay remnants dating back to the early and late Iron Ages to study past magnetic fields using "archaeomagnetism."
One of the lead researchers, John Tarduno, explained: "When you burn clay at very high temperatures, you actually stabilise the magnetic minerals, and when they cool from these very high temperatures, they lock in a record of the earth's magnetic field."

The flipping is not a concern so much as the in-between when the magnetic field is gone. Watched a show that claimed that genetic diversity resulted from the last flip and previous flips. What doesn’t kill you will make your stronger... or more genetically diverse.

It's possible that there are people who still associate magnetic pole shift (which goes on all the time) with a shift of the physical pole. Often enough coverage of these magnetic pole drifts are written up that way by what passes for journalists.
The book "5/5/2000" has more in common with the earlier book "The Jupiter Effect". Both claimed planetary alignments would have direct impact on the Earth's surface (tectonic plates in the Gribbin book, a shift of the physical pole in the Noone book). Neither one turned out to be correct.
I always thought you had to worry about too many Poles on one side of the plane?
Sigh, Africa Wins Again.
I remember the good old days when people realized that the poles shift, and there was the potential to erase video tapes.

“In a challenge to a major aspect of the theory of plate tectonics, NSF-supported scientists have discovered the presence of an ancient conduit deep in the Earth’s mantle beneath Brazil.
“The conduit appears to have remained geographically fixed with respect to the overlying continent despite thousands of kilometers of South American plate motion. This observation runs contrary to a major tenet of plate tectonic theory-—that the motion of lithospheric plates is essentially independent of flow in the upper mantle beneath the plates-— and implies that the upper mantle and the overlying South American continent have remained coupled since the breakup of the Gondwanaland super-continent and opening of the South Atlantic Ocean some 120 million years ago. This result also implies that large-scale convection in the mantle may be responsible for the motion of the great continental plates, such as South America, where the driving force for plate motion has not been well understood.”
