Karl Schmid, an on-camera reporter for ABC’s Los Angeles affiliate, came out as HIV positive on Friday night in a powerful Facebook post about stigma and acceptance.
The 37-year-old Australian import covers human interest stories and Hollywood on ABC7, reporting from events like the Academy Awards and the annual Vanity Fair Oscar party. After a decade living with HIV, Schmid said he came forward despite numerous industry peers urging him to stay quiet.
“For 10 years I’ve struggled with ‘do I or don’t I?’ For ten years the stigma and industry professionals have said, ‘don’t! It’ll ruin you,”’ wrote Schmid.
“But here’s the thing. I’m me. I’m just like you. I have a big heart and I want to be loved and accepted. I may be on TV from time to time, but at the end of the day I’m just an average guy who wants want we all want. To be accepted and loved by our friends and family and to be encouraged by our peers,” he said.
The post tagged charity T-shirt project The AIDS Memorial, which shares stories of “love, loss and remembrance” of those affected by the disease.

I wasn’t being critical of the guy contracting Aids. I guess you missed my point that he is lucky to have contracted it when treatment was available.

“Coming out” is a means to appeal to the collective and to discard personal consciousness and responsibility as a means to face one’s bad choices and future decisions. My opinion and guess is that he has lots of colleagues who are also gay, both men and women and, therefore, has lots of support in the industry.
Did he have the disease when he immigrated to America from Australia or contract it here?
This is not what itused to be, drugs now a days are very effctive. Remenber when Magic Johnson came out positive. He’s still around!!!

Oh, yeah, I understood you weren’t being harsh. I think where I’m disagreeing on the “treatment” part.
Anything can be treated, but AIDS cannot be cured - and I don’t expect it ever will - and those who live with it have a pretty miserable existence dealing with it- it saps much of their energy, for one.
You are indeed blessed to live in an era where AML is both treatable and even curable.
