The European Southern Observatory (ESO) has released a stunning collection of images of the circumstellar discs that surround young stars. The images were captured with the SPHERE (Spectro-Polarimetric High-contrast Exoplanet REsearch) instrument on the ESOs Very Large Telescope (VLT) in Chile. Weve been looking at images of circumstellar disks for quite some time, but this collection reveals the fascinating variety of shapes an sizes that these disks can take.

Bottom-right and middle-left look like butterfly yo-yos. I guess the dark center is dark because denser matter blocks the light... but the yoyo shape still seems odd

I tried getting Andromeda with my Nikon D90 and got zilch. I really have respect for those that get amazing photos, it is a lot more that aiming and a long exposure time.
Canis Major, no doubt, chasing all of then.
Looks like a glow-in-the-dark, yo-yo convention.
Well gee whiz. Andromeda is pretty easy, at least to get the shape, you know? I’ve got it somewhere! ... Ah yes, I remember it well!
A digital camera alone will record very good photos.
A telescope will help make the photos better by enlarging the objects.
