FAIRBANKS—A Fairbanks man critically shot a pit bull in Aurora Subdivision on Wednesday evening after it attacked another dog being walked by two girls.

The pit bull was shot twice in the head and later euthanized by a veterinarian, according to Fairbanks police officer Doug Welborn.

The 12- and 16-year-old girls were walking their rat terrier on the 2000 block of Bridgewater Drive when the attack happened. The girls were not injured, but the pit bull's owner was bitten while trying to stop the attack, according to Welborn.

Vern Woods, 80, told the Daily News-Miner he was home watching TV when he saw the two girls come out of their house with their dog on a leash. They crossed to Woods' side of the street and were taking pictures when the pit bull "came out of nowhere at a dead run." . . .

If people would only look at ER stats for dogs bites and ERs. Hugely more pit bull attacks and fatal ones.

http://enhs.umn.edu/current/6120/bites/dogbiterisk.html

https://www.caninejournal.com/dog-bite-statistics/

And the ER visits by dog type I couldn’t find because I don’t have time and you should do it if you think pit bulls are benign.

The actuaries say that they are only about twice as bad as average dog breeds for injury/liability risk.

Yesterday, you called me a liar, a moron, and Chet99 and demanded that I not post to you again.

Have you now changed your mind? Or is this one-way?

I do not know what insurance actuarial stats you are using.

I did post an article on April 9 on FR regarding State Farm paying out twice as much as anyone else for pit bull attacks.

Is this to what you refer?

Not funny. A horrible way to die.

Humans have a responsibility to be humane when a n animal needs to be killed.

German Shepard’s scare me. I was babysitting my neighbors two Shepard’s when I was a kid about 14 or so. I would play with them in the yard and such. One day I went over to feed them they turned on me and I beat it outta there. I came home and asked my dad to go over and feed them. He did and i never messed with them again.

Seems to me there are several factors here. Pit bull dogs are very popular, coupled with the number of people who lack responsibility, just as this dog owner displayed by disappearing, it is inevitable there will appear to be large numbers of attacks. Rottweiler, German Shepherds, Dobermans were all more popular during certain times and there appeared to be large amounts of attacks during those times also by those dogs. A web search of “pit bull saves” shows just as many acts on the other end of the spectrum by pit bull dogs.

Let’s see. Started with German Shepherds in the 70s, then dobermans, then rots, chows for a short time and now pit bulls. Akita occasionally. It’s mostly matter of what’s the latest fad in badass dog. Then they get inbred and mistreated for a few generations and you have monster dogs.

Whenever a certain breed becomes the favorite breed for jackasses to own, you’ll have a lot of jackass dogs of that breed.

“Pits are magnets for lowlifes.”

One of my sons owns a Pit (as well as another non-Pit). He’s medically retired from the Marine Corps, and one of the most honorable men I know.

Personally, I wouldn’t own one - put I respect his decision.

Link to Charlotte-Mecklenburg's (NC) animal shelter/adoption center.

There are 54 dogs available for adoption...most of which are Pit Bulls. Many of the other available breeds have obvious characteristics of Pit Bulls, but are called lab mixes or some such. The city/county is LYING in an effort to get these dogs adopted.

No, no hate for the dog. Just the stupid owners who always seem to be chasing their dog on the attack of some innocent person or pet. Stupid owners about to be sued, again.

I learned my lesson and have never taken my lab back to a public dog park. He is my first dog I have had on my own and I was unaware that idiots would bring dangerous aggressive dogs to a public dog park and be so irresponsible as to turn them loose. I’ll say this....anything that attacks my dog be it man or beast better get ready because I will retaliate. Not can. Will.

“Whenever a certain breed becomes the favorite breed for jackasses to own, you’ll have a lot of jackass dogs of that breed.”

Very true. My shepherd would let kids ride on her back, poke her in the eyes, and pull her ears with no reaction but a long-suffering expression. OTOH, a burglar broke in once, and...

True, however, one must consider the totality of the situation. A gunfight in the neighborhood is not going to have a humane result. A prison term for either the owner or the dog killer is not humane. So, choosing among unattractive alternatives, a surreptitious poisoning is a good way to avoid the loss of human life or the incarceration pf persons who need not be incarcerated.
