German and Polish cyclists feared dead in Mexico

Two cyclists, one German and one Polish, are feared dead in Mexico after authorities found a body in a ravine and other signs they may have plunged off a cliff, investigators said on Friday.

The two men -- Holger Hagenbusch of Germany and Krzysztof Chmielewski of Poland -- had been traveling the world by bicycle, but were reported missing in the state of Chiapas, in southern Mexico.

Investigators believe they may have lost control on a treacherous road between the towns of San Cristobal and Ocosingo and tumbled into the ravine, said local prosecutor Arturo Lievano.

"It's a very accident-prone area," he told radio network Formula.

"It's a very narrow path and the ravine is approximately 200 meters (650 feet) deep. Biking there is actually a very high-risk activity."

Lievano said the German and Polish embassies were working with Mexican authorities and had shared documents and photographs.

"We have clothes, a t-shirt, personal effects and a body" that was discovered on April 26, he said.

cool.

I raced bikes.

I trained in Prescott for the oxygen deprivation and mountain climbs.

Hit 58 mph between switchbacks.

Brake and speed induced oscillation were the limiting factors.

The guard rails would not have prevented death in case of a mishap.

The edge.

Flew hang gliders for 10 years in SoCal.

From Bay City Michigan - weird huh?

Yeah, I'm sure. Thanks BBell.

I was about 11 or 12 when I pegged my bike’s speedometer at 50 down a steep hill. The coaster brake was really hot when I finally got stopped.

I had one of those! Mine was about 6” in diameter as I recall, and was made of transparent red plastic. Very cool

That is exactly what mine looked like!

Sounds like you’re about my age. I’ll be 68 next month.

I get that story!

There was a 9% 1.25 mile hill call “big susie’.

During the 70s, a couple of friends and I road out to it 6 miles away. My friend was on a 10 speed, I was on a Schwinn Stingray.

We started down the hill in shorts, tank tops and no protection whatsoever.

I buried my chin on the block connecting my fork to the handlebars.

My friend on the ten speed lifted his chest and the front wheel came off the ground, he recovered.

What a rush.

Same as you.

“Couple of motorcyclists came up beside me and one of them taps his speedometer and says “You’re doing 45.””

You’re a better man than I am.

My old Schwinn Typhoon (one-speed, coaster brake) had a speedometer that went to 50. I pegged it down a steep hill when I was about 11, and the brake was practically smoking when I finally got stopped. A few years later, I might have gone faster than that on several occasions on my Peugeot 10-speed (which I still have after 46 years), but it didn’t have a speedometer. Nobody wore helmets back then, either.

I have traveled on that road by bus, and the only road in the US that seems similar to me is the east side of Tioga Pass going up from Nevada to Yosemite. It is a scary road and an accident should not surprise anyone.

I live near that highway. Tioga Pass (SR 120) heads west from Lee Vining, California on Highway 395 into Yosemite Park. It is a very narrow and winding road, not for the faint hearted.

Holy crap! You’re a frequent flier. How was Mount Everest when you reached the summit the first time?

Unless there’s more to the road, it doesn’t seem so awful in this video.

“RIP to both.”

Totally agree, a tragedy for sure, but they died doing what they loved and no one lives forever anyway.

How did it feel to be the first man to break the sound barrier on two wheels?

Big chunks of Chiapas are under the control of communist guerrillas. Somewhat suicidal for white folks to venture into that area.
