Sylvester Stallone is know primarily for three things.
Firstly, hes known for Rocky, the rags-to-riches movie that made him an overnight sensation.
Secondly, hes known for Judge Dredd, and essentially ruining a classic comic book character.
Thirdly, hes known for the Rambo movies, a series about a Vietnam war veteran with severe PTSD, who tries and utterly fails to adapt to modern civilian life.
Rambo Gun Source: Orion Pictures First Blood, the original film in the series, hit the cultural zeitgeist at just the right time. This was probably less to do with the movies biting political commentary, and more because the 80s was a time of muscular men, explosions, and violent bloodsplatter, all of which the film had in spades.
Nevertheless, despite spawning a bunch of sequels when it was relatively new, the world of Rambo has been quiet for a long time. This feels a little weird Rocky worked as an aging comeback story, so itd be interesting to revisit another bygone cultural icon.
Especially considering that Rambo as a character is defined by his inability to fit neatly into the modern world. Surely this would be perfect for another film?
Stallone himself seems to think so. The director/actor will be making a fifth Rambo movie, and the premise actually sounds really interesting.
Wild West Rambo According to Deadline:
In the fifth episode of the franchise, when the daughter of one of his friends is kidnapped, Rambo, who has been working on a ranch, crosses the U.S.-Mexican border and quickly finds himself up against the full might of one of Mexicos most violent cartels.
Yeah, Im pretty on board with the idea of a new Rambo film thats basically a classic Wild West movie. Its got a hostage, a bunch of outlaws, and a grizzled, aging protagonist whos ready to either ride out into the sunset or go down in a blaze of glory.
I imagine that this would be True Grit or Logan, but with Sly Stallone. Id happily watch that.
All this being said, Im a little concerned about the central conflict. Rambo movies have always been deeply political, and Im curious about why this movie would frame lawless Mexicans as the villains at this particular moment in history.
Im hoping that this wont be played in such a way as to make the film feel like a lecture on the need for that wall that a certain politician has been trying to build.
Something tells me, though, no matter which way the movie leans, a large chunk of the target audience are going to interpret the story however they want anyway.
There were a few things in “Demolition Man” that may have gone over people’s heads, namely a lot of references to Huxley’s “Brave New World”.
Blast from the past...
Off topic, but I found 1984 to be far superior to Brave New World. (at least for drawing emotion from the reader)
Not nuts. Shellshocked and unappreciated.
I like his latest movies, "The Expendables."
You are correct. It’s Rocky & Rambo.
Great line in “Rambo” (i.e., the 4th movie) where missionaries try to enlist him to go into a war-torn area with their supplies.
Rambo: “Whattya got?”
Missionary: “Bibles, food, basic supplies”
Rambo: “They need guns.”
Later the missionary party is captured. When Rambo hears the news he says, “They shoulda took guns.”
Rambo! Come back! Rambo!
I liked him in Nighthawks.
The only memorable line from the movie (according to me):
And don't even get me started about the three shells...
Is this thread about the porn actor from “The Party at Kitty and Stud’s” (1970)? (a.k.a. The Italian Stallion)
Hey, he moved up to “Subway Thug #1 (uncredited)” in Woody Allen’s (now there’s another creep!) “Bananas” in 1971!
Bet he curses IMDB.com every day...
;)
Yep!
Stallone was a taste I acquired early, then shortly thereafter de-acquired. He is the exact opposite of Dustin Hoffman, who disappears into his roles. Stallone plays the the same character with a predictable plot in every movie he has ever made. See one, you’ve seen them all.
I eep getting demolition man and Dredd confused. The I remember. Demolition Man was great fun. I like how the little thing rang out every time he swore. And the three shells.
Im hoping that this wont be played in such a way as to make the film feel like a lecture on the need for that wall that a certain politician has been trying to build. As opposed to a movie like this:
Was he in Lords of Flatbush?
Lead/copper bullets that spark? Jumping over mortar shrapnel? Outrunning blast fronts? Rockets which corkscrew and still hit the intended target? I can’t wait.
I didn’t carry it out with me to the extent that it was ever an issue for anyone else. And figured not acting like a loon decreased the probability of being taken for one.
