Rare film footage from the dawn of the previous century when moving pictures were rare and most people had never seen any. Appx 15 minutes of footage showing various aspects of the funeral rites and processions for Queen Victoria. Her death was a huge deal as she had reigned for 63 years in a world where the average life expectancy was 47. Few could remember another monarch and she was the very symbol of the British Empire. Most people must have felt that the Earth had shifted under their feet.

By today's standards I think some of the military drill was a bit sloppy. But one must remember that there had been little in the form of the pomp and circumstance we typically associate with the British monarchy for a very long time. Following the death of her husband in 1861 Victoria had gone into lifelong mourning, eschewing the normal ceremonial duties of the crown. She retreated from public life making only rare appearances, notably for her Golden and Diamond Jubilees.

Wife and I loved the PBS miniseries. I liked the way she let people know the conversation was over. “You may leave now.”

Here is a link to film footage w/sound of the funeral procession of George VI. I imagine the funeral music was the same or very similar.

Interesting....seemed to be two parts to the casket...and it was VERY heavy. And, what were the people with the white funny hats (strips of fabric?)

There were two coffins. One of lead, the outer of wood. The funny hats were ceremonial hats/helmets with ostrich plumes.
