The passing of the Queen will be one the most disruptive events in Britain since WWII
Business Insider ^ | June 2018 | Rob Price

Since ascending to the throne in 1952, the monarch has seen 13 prime ministers serve Britain and lived through another 13 US presidents. She's now 92. At some point — not for many years yet, we hope — Queen Elizabeth II's reign will come to an end.

But what happens then?

For at least 12 days — between her passing, the funeral and beyond — Britain will grind to a halt. The stock markets and banks are likely to close.

But to focus on the financial disruption doesn't begin to describe the sheer magnitude of the queen's death. It will be an event unlike anything Britain has seen since the end of World War II.

Most British people have never known life without the queen. It will be a strange, uncertain time.

The British Empire once covered a quarter of the Earth's landmass, and for a brief, surreal period it is likely to feel as if the empire still exists, as all its former subjects will turn toward Britain for the news.

It will probably be the best-attended funeral of all time. World leaders from across the globe will flock to attend.

There will be hundreds of changes up and down the country in the weeks and months after the queen's death.

New currency will be printed and minted immediately. British currency bears images of the monarch, and the portraits of Charles will already have been made in preparation.

The British national anthem will change."God Save The Queen" will get some new lyrics — or some old ones, rather. It will become "God Save The King."

Likewise, a great deal of military insignia will require updating.

And plenty more will need to change.

The Queen has served her country with dignity for 60+ years. The job is WAY tougher than it looks, and she has carried out her duties extraordinarily well. A little respect....

And she has done that famously. And with dignity. Not bad for a woman who was trained as a vehicle mechanic during her military service in WWII.

CNN will have an hour special looking at who is most likely to inherit the iPod with Obama’s speeches.

I understand that when they print new money with Charles' likeness, the bill, if you roll it up, will be able to double as a tampon.

Okay, cheap shot. I know.

I thought she was going to have Charles passed over. Perhaps that is impossible. With that fop as King it will be good it is only a figurehead position.

It's a shame that the Queen is not allowed to pick her successor. Because the UK is in trouble. They'd have a much better chance if Ralph were the next king, and not Charles.

The King and Queen can call elections. It is actually a real job. I am sure the calling of elections could be done some other way, but until that way is determined the Queen is a real thing.

I’ve never been much into royal worship but she seems like a nice lady and has done a fine job in a role she didn’t choose. And I like her husband. Anyway, things got better once they figured out the Yanks don’t like their tea taxed.

I have always admired her. Not for the "royalty" thing, but because of how she rose to the challenge. She was a very young woman who was thrust into a an all-consuming job she may not have wanted. In the process some dreams or goals that young woman may have had outside of that job were shelved. Yet she "kept calm and carried on", and has performed her duty quite well while managing a family in the process. The fancy trappings of royal life aside, she accepted a heavy burden but to my knowledge has never complained publicly. I have to respect someone like that.

And when she passes on, instead of a King, the people of Londinistan will demand a MAHDI.
