[2016] Would Margaret Thatcher have backed Brexit?
UK Telegraph ^ | Feb 2016 | Charles Moore

Charles Powell, her most important private secretary, now believes that she would have negotiated a deal quite like David Cameron’s latest, and urged a Remain vote. Norman Tebbit, one of her most senior and like-minded ministers, says the opposite. I shall not break my rule by agreeing or disagreeing with either.

But the story of Mrs Thatcher and Europe does reveal something interesting. The whole time she was in office, she never said that Britain should leave. Once she had left office, she said privately – to me and several others – that she thought we should.

“You have not anchored Germany to Europe. You have anchored Europe to a newly-dominant unified Germany. In the end, my friends, you will find that it will not work.”
Thatcher lost her job as PM over her opposition to the EU’s monetary union plans; the red Tories defected one by one. She issued the above warning in 1995.

Thatcher would have absolutely backed Brexit. We lived there during the time she was selling off the Gas Co and the Phone Co. She valued the shares really low so that everyone could afford to buy in. And she limited the number any one person could buy, at the low rate, and she only offered the low rate to people living in Britain. After the first sales to anyone in Britain wanting to buy, she opened it up to the world to buy. Poor people like us were able to buy 200 shares and turn around and sell at double the price, after she opened up the sales to all. She was all about Capitalism. She wouldn’t have made the deal that Theresa May made.

Do they think she would’ve joined the EUSSR?

I remember she was not enthusiastic about the wall coming down either. She knew what would happen if Germany united.

That is an easy one to answer. Thatcher would never have allowed England to become a member of the EU.
