Want to get a whole bunch of people to really, really care about climate change and rising sea levels? Tell them their internet is at risk.
In a new study, researchers at the University of WisconsinMadison and the University of Oregon found that thousands of miles of buried fiber optic cable are at risk of drowning under the rising seas. This isnt something that will happen in the distant future, but could be a reality in just 15 years, the study suggests. Better backup your Tumblr.
The peer-reviewed study combined data from the Internet Atlas, the map that keeps track of the physical internet, and projections of sea level incursion from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). It found that more than 4,000 miles of the conduit that carries the internet to much of the United States could be exposed to seawater by 2033. While the buried fiber optic cables are designed to be water-resistant, they are not waterproof, and that means potential trouble for coastal residents who like the internet (a.k.a. everyone but Luddites, infants, and my grandma).
The most susceptible networks are those of CenturyLink, Inteliquent, and AT&T, while the U.S. cities at highest risk of losing internet access are New York, Miami, and Seattle. However, the effects of internet outages in those areas would ripple across the internet faster than a viral cat video.
I have often wondered how they repair fiber cuts. Hundreds of fibers (I think) but how do they match and repair? It isn’t like copper.
It Was before net neuter reality
>>What about the female sea monkeys?
Is that a racist code word? /s
NSA has perm records on everybody
Don’t photons leaked into the ground cause pollution?
I guess we’re incapable of laying new cable.
but won’t the fiber rust? /s
You’re welcome. :D
Dont photons leaked into the ground cause pollution?

bits do, and so do bytes.
I have often wondered how they repair fiber cuts.
Basically a mobile clean room is dispatched to the scene. The vehicle costs well north of $250,000 to build. A certified technician then has to individually clean and polish and then splice the break in each individual fiber.
The damage to a large cable can take days and costs can run as high as $100,000 a day. NOT counting lost traffic, costs to reroute, etc.
I work with folks who do this every day. Theyre highly skilled and well compensated.

Minorities, women, and children are hardest hit.

Its because all the humans hve been drinking the water. They just drink and drink and dont put it back.
What’s the next trick to try to get people to fall for the scam? OOH! I’ve got it!
CLIMATE CHANGE WILL CANCEL CHRISTMAS!
The only way to save Christmas is to give lots of money. TODAY! Right this minute! Save da Erf!
I heard they still have some internet in Californie (inland of course).
That is a good analogy.
BRING IT ON!
THERE ARE TOO DAMN MANY COMMERCIALS!
COMMERCIALS WILL RUIN THE INTERNET, NOT GLOBAL WARMING!
Post 1 is the thread winner!
On the positive side, it will remove span.
So loss of 4000 miles of 113,000 miles will destroy the internet? Yeah.
Oh, please. In 15 years, we’ll all be getting our internet through 20g.
