I have often wondered how they repair fiber cuts. Hundreds of fibers (I think) but how do they match and repair? It isn’t like copper.

Basically a mobile clean room is dispatched to the scene. The vehicle costs well north of $250,000 to build. A certified technician then has to individually clean and polish and then splice the break in each individual fiber.

The damage to a large cable can take days and costs can run as high as $100,000 a day. NOT counting lost traffic, costs to reroute, etc.

I work with folks who do this every day. They’re highly skilled and well compensated.
