BOSTON (CBS) There is an unknown at the other end of every police encounter. A blind corner to round, a door to open, or a suspect to question.
After viewing videos of police officers who were the victims of surprise attacks, former Green Beret, Robert Scali, developed Vector Shield.
Vector Shield is just that: a lightweight shield that can be worn on an officers forearm and is impervious to most ammunition.
[Its] designed to protect the hydraulics of the center line of an officer. And also, its designed to protect civilians because when the officer feels safe, theyre going to respond a lot different, Scali said.
Vector came on the market three years ago. Since then, it has been sold to 60 police departments across the country, including several in Massachusetts.
Each shield is handmade by veterans, a selling point for retired Massport Police Chief Joseph Lawless.
It was less confrontational and it gave a level of protection that you just cant get anywhere. You cant get it with a standard vest. Its not intimidating, said Lawless, who bought ten for his department.
In the event of an attack, Scali says, an officer can easily lift the shield to protect his or her face. It can also be used to de-escalate situations without using lethal force.
It is not designed to kill. Its designed to protect people, up close and personal, Scali said.
OK i'm sorry but is this supposed to make the person they are confronting drop their gun from laughter ? I support the cops and all but this just makes them look ridiculous to me what they gonna do when villains just start shooting feet and legs ?
Also it’s another tool that home invasion robbers can add to their bag.
Off Topic: That looks like Cory Booker.
The little shield might look a little more dignified if it was either transparent or at least translucent.
What I’m seeing now, reminds me of ping pong paddle or a child’s coffin.
It should not have any sharp edges, otherwise the shield could be snatched away and used to hit the cops.
Is that going to be hanging on their belts?
There’s already so much stored on the belts.
As in, not shooting at the first "I was in fear for my life" opportunity?
Cynic that I am, I suspect the effect would be to give them a sense of invulnerability and blaze away.
The magic words will still work for the investigation.
I prefer JudgeDredd.
I can see this protecting the head and neck. Officers wear bullet-proof vests that leave their necks and heads exposed. Something is better than nothing.
Thanks ATOMIC_PUNK. I think I may want one.
Holy Guadalcanal, Batman!
1 shot groin, 2 shots head. Or viceversa and spilt the mag or cylinder gun handlers choice.
Whoever will reactivity send hands to groin clearing for head shots.
And no I dont hate Cops.
I also see cops in CO killed a Homeowner after the Homeowner had killed a criminal that had already hurt a Child so...
Very true if they see the armor they aim for the head.
Its to small doesn’t cover enough area as a true ballistic shield could.
My first thought after seeing ir was that you could karate chop a shiithead pretty fast and hard with it. Then you could follow up with some blows to the shoulder with a D-cell Maglight.
Needs a blinding light.
That is a variation on the “Buckler”, which has been around for such a long time it is even mentioned in the Psalms of David.
I would be more worried about LEO #2 behind LEO #1 who seems to be muzzling LEO #1 in the photo. Needs to figure out how to ‘Sul’ with his new shield...
“[Its] designed to protect the hydraulics of the center line of an officer.”
Gonna need to extend it down to protect the Johnson region too.
Gang bangers aren’t too particular about where they shoot
