Smoking cannabis ages the brain by an average of 2.8 years, new research suggests.
This is compared to four years in schizophrenia patients, according to the largest study of its kind. Brain ageing is defined as reduced blood flow through the organ.
Excessive alcohol also ages the organ by 0.6 years, the research adds.
Lead author Dr Daniel Amen, founder of Amen Clinics, said: 'The cannabis abuse finding was especially important, as our culture is starting to see marijuana as an innocuous substance. This study should give us pause about it.'
Reduced brain blood flow has previously been linked to stroke and dementia.

If you read the article the term aging is interchangeable with the term damage. They used MRIs to look for identifiable brain damage in a huge number of people. It is interesting that among all external hazards to the brain marijuana was listed as number one in this study. Marijuana caused 2.8 years of brain damage in contrast to alcohol which caused .6 years of brain damage. But in 3 - 2 - 1... we will be having the regulars claiming that marijuana causes no harm and benefits all parts of the body.

I have friends from high-school whose brains must be 150 years old by now.
Paranoid pot users will no doubt see this as a bogus study, because marijuana is a miracle drug. Except it’s not really a drug. It’s natural so it can’t be harmful. Plus it cures cancer, and everything else, blah blah blah. Trying to have a discussion with pot users about whether pot is harmful is like having a discussion with pot users about anything, pretty soon you realize their brains take a lot of detours and wrong turns. But they’re convinced that they are smarter than everyone else.
True.
If this article makes so stupid a mistake as to the effects of alcohol, then how can we take seriously their claims of marijuana?
