An Ohio officer shot his police dog after it attacked him, leaving him with serious bite wounds, the Columbus Police Department said.
Officer Brian Carter underwent surgery at a hospital and K9 Benzi, a 3-year-old Belgian Malinois, was humanely euthanized.
Carter was correcting Benzis behavior through verbal commands at the departments K9 office Saturday morning when the dog suddenly turned on him, a Columbus Police spokesperson said in a news release.

Does this mean that Citizens can now Shoot Cops that appear to be “unstable”??
He deserves the DEATH PENALTY for this 1st degree Murder of a Police Officer.
effing cop was probably beating the poor dog. No sympathy. fire him
I don’t ever want to know you. what you described is sick.
The first thing I noticed was something in the way the dog is sitting. Something not right.

More reason to use agerman Shepherds.
Sorry, typo.
German Shepherd
Everyone who trains protection or military dogs has been bitten. I’m speaking from experience. However there is a huge difference between being bitten and having a dog ‘turn on you’.
To the best of my knowledge they are neutered as well as given a procedure to eliminate bloat as well. The air force has a Malinois breeding program at Lackland. Obviously these are not neutered
It will probably come as a surprise, but most police/military dogs have to be acclimated to biting in different environments. In other words if you only do bitework outdoors they may not hit on command indoors, they have to be used outdoors/indoor, in daylight and dark, etc. They are proifed by biting on a suit as well as a sleeve, and the final proof is biting with no equipment with the dog muzzled. I have one that is as strong as any, you literally don’t let her around strangers without a muzzle. At the same time, my 13 year old granddaughter and 16 year old grandson will take her out for a run twice daily when we’re on vacation, she is entirely trustworthy with her family often sleeps with the 8 year old when he’s here. The ones that are dangerous are the ones that don’t have confidence and bite from fear, which is the definition of instability.
The AF had a breeding program @ Lackland back in the 1960’s and 70’s. They were called Sentry Dogs, and I think that they were bred from German Shepherd Dogs mainly. Search USAF Sentry dogs, there is a lot of info there.
I'm not naive about dogs. I've had GSD for 28 years of marriage and about 30 years before that.
I've been bitten once by my GSD because I was young and stupid. She was about 1 year old and chewed up my good cowboy boot. I got pissed and swatted the crap out of her and she saw me raise my hand and stopped me by clamping on briefly. I was shocked by how fast and how hard she clamped down.
I calmed down, she backed off and I just realized that I was the wrong one and she was scared. We were friends for 12 years and I respected her after that and learned what a crappy dog owner I was till I started to train myself and my dogs.
The jaw dropping feature is something I’ve noticed about strangers’ reaction to mine. He’s small for a male Dane, only about 129 lb. He’s also reasonably well behaved, being basically friendly but a little reticent. Nevertheless, whenever I walk him near strangers, I always get a “WOW!” reaction with people wanting to pet him. He’s a black and white mantled Dane with huge white feet, a white chest, a white snoot and long, soft, floppy black ears. In short, he looks like a giant black and white Beagle, all of which makes him a thermonuclear chick magnet.
His impressive size is cool, too. It does a great job of attracting friendly and curious people while scaring off those who are up to no good, all of it without a single growl or threat.

You know, I have to say that I have noticed the exact same characteristics in my Shepherd girls.
They are instant ice breakers with literally everyone, hot girls, not so hot girls, old ladies, old men, young men, all first responders, anyone who works in a fast food window, free stuff for the dogs. It’s just on and on.
Gotta be careful with young children sometimes though, because many do not seem to have the proper respect of shepherds, and even though mine are friendly, there are definitely some which are not friendly.
And shady characters generally stay well in the shade.
An officer has to want to be K9 and apply for and qualify for specifically
Less likely to be a dog beater
Less likely to be a dog beater
yep, but a police officer is less likely to be a bully, drunk, coward, thief, liar, or murderer.....but there you are, huh?
Not cops are shooting their partners. Interesting.
He called the dogs mother a bitch.
Wheres the /s
Will he be charged with killing a police officer?
A criminal would be... if they can’t defend themselves from an animal attacking them with deadly force, why can a cop?
