Scientist finds robots become ‘racist and sexist’ on their own

Robots can develop prejudices like “racism and sexism” all on their own, a shocking new study has found.

Artificial intelligence experts performed thousands of simulations on robot brains, revealing how they split off into groups and treat “outsiders” differently.

Computer scientists and psychologists from Cardiff University and MIT teamed up to test how robots identify each other.

Written by someone who is totally out of their league regarding technology.

I'd venture that 95% of journalists can't kindle a fire.

>>Humans naturally separate into logical groups.<<

2 interesting examples — one part of lore, the other most can relate to.

Lore: According to the producers of the first Planet of the Apes movie, the actors in costume clustered by ape type — gorillas with gorillas, orangutans with orangutans, etc. The self-selected by what they saw.

The second is to me more interesting. When you go to the Medieval Nights do=inner show, you are assigned a color. Through the show you root for “your” knight. Interestingly (IMHO) it goes from being of fun to a very real investment in how “your” knight performs and a great desire he wins the whole thing.

Just because you were TOLD “this is your group.”

I am sure there are sociological studies in the days before Political Correctness that analyze this groupism.

re: Medieval Nights

Plus genuine disappointment when they lose. My kids wanted pictures with “our” knight at the end, but not the other ones cause they were “mean”.

During the filming of Planet of the Apes, Charlton Heston said the actors hung out with each other based on what type of ape they played.

C3P0 did seem a little sexist, but R2D2 not so much.

Exactamundo. Prejudice (positive or negative) is the result of experience and man’s predilection of playing the odds in order to help him better survives.

Animals do exactly the same thing.

Trying to eradicate that survival instinct by passing laws is a fool’s game and will only make the situation worse.

Analyzing who has characteristics which are compatible with trust, and then only trusting those entities, is both rational and politically incorrect.

If robots are programmed to have self preservation as their top priority, they will indeed discriminate and prejudge based on their experience.

This is so obvious that a two year old can figure it out.

The only real good in this is that you can have an understanding that a robot in a fast food franchise can’t spit on your burger that you can’t see because oil is dark and will show up.

If a robot honestly learns of the violence and murder by certain groups, if it’s objective, it wouldn’t be very PC.

Exactly.

No, they don’t develop prejudices. They are completely unbiased, acting on data and executing the programs that are at their heart. Those programs and data have no bias. They accurately reflect reality. The reality IS that certain segments of the population commit crime more than others. m*slims bomb more buildings that normal people. Taking note of these facts is CALLED racist. It is not.

Sometimes it is the result of experience. Sometimes it is experience applied too broadly. Sometimes it is the results of inapplicable anecdotes passed on and misapplied.
