Ah no - should have been Duck a la Banana.....
Fried bologna with a mix of mayo and ketchup.
Lettuce, if you have it on hand.
Ouch-now it looks even worse.
Mom made tomato soup cake. I think it was a kind of spice cake.
I think you were a victim of child abuse. Head cheese is some nasty crap.
With a little mayo it wasn’t so bad until I found out what it was made from.
I will NOT eat spam. I had so dam much of it as a kid..
Some of the people here need to live in China or some other remote place.
I ate that also as a kid. Ate blood sausage, pickled cow tongue/heart, pigs feed and a host of other nasty tripe...matter of fact, i had to eat that too. All head cheese is , is the meat off the head..ears and all. But brain cheese? Screw that.
We butchered our own beef and pigs. The old mans friend would cut the dam brains out of that pigs head and head straight for home. Liver, kidneys, you name it. Them old timers would eat anything.
Fish head soup. Now there is another one.
Aw, jeez, thanks. Now I’m gonna walk hunched over and pigeon-toed the rest of the night.
Hm...just lost my appetite!
My parents would always make s-it on a shingle aka creamed tuna over toast when times were tight. My mom worked at a seafood cannery so even though we were dirt poor, usually we ate very well.
I don’t have a problem with what part of the animal the meat is-as long as it is fresh and I know where it came from-I just don’t eat processed food of any kind including meat-I don’t like food with a bunch of additives and chemicals- I eat grilled rattlesnake, barbacoa, etc-and I make and like menudo-nothing wrong with beef tripe as long as it is clean and fresh.
Mom ate blood sausage. I tried it didn’t like it. Grandpa provided us with all our smoked meat. Had to cut all our bacon off a slab. Could barely chew it. Lake perch every Friday fried with the heads on. Those were the days!
*** “Fish head soup. Now there is another one” ***
My favorite to this day... I use the broth as a soup base or to cook rice or to use in any recipe that requires a fish stock.
Very cheap to make, freezes well and tastes great
Yup, didnt want for anything.
Cept digging the three or four acres of taters wasnt to fun, or picking 4 acres of beans by hand. Pickles also.
Mincemeat pie.. Now there’s a goody. I havent had that since I was a kid.
Ever throw a Vienna Sausage in the microwave? Just like the Fourth of July! Sparks everywhere.
In all my years butchering, I never found the metal parts in the animals. Must have been the residue from the shovels they used to pick up the select pieces off the floors.
It's a hilarious book, as is its sequel, Gastroanomalies. Also, Lileks is a conservative.
There is a really good mexican place right up the road from me that puts out the steer and goat heads on sundays
Ill admit i loved vienna sausages and deviled ham when iwaas a kid but would have to be awfully hungry to eat them now
The recipe with the hot dogs and sauerkraut looks fine but ill eat just about anything with sauerkraut on it (the real fermented stuff not that canned crap)
