Miracle escape for Space Station astronauts as rocket fails mid-launch: American and Russian [tr]

Two astronauts are alive after dramatically aborting their voyage to the International Space Station when their Russian Soyuz rocket malfunctioned while it carried them into orbit at 4,970mph.

American Nick Hague and Russian Aleksey Ovchinin were forced to abort their mission on the cusp of space, at an altitude of approximately 50km (164,000ft).

They landed safely in Kazakhstan after a 'ballistic re-entry', during which they experienced forces of up to 7G.

Video footage from the launch at the Baikonur Cosmodrome shows a large plume of smoke coming from the rocket at the moment it failed and footage from inside the capsule shows the two astronauts being violently shaken about.

We dont need our own space shuttles. We can just hitch rides with the Russians during non election years.

9Gs vs 21Gs - either can be fatal or survived - it depends upon DURATION! If they did encounter 21G, it must have been VERY MOMENTARY and even then I tend to doubt the figure. A 150lb (guessing) astronaut in a form-fitted suit would only need to have a single crease to be badly hurt at a load of 3,000+ pounds! The same thing at 9Gs would be very uncomfortable.

Miracle, my ass. The abort system did what it was designed to do.

Someone go over to the Daily Mail and pry their hands from their pearls!

This is just a few weeks after a hole was found in a Russian module on the ISS.

Remarkable safety technology. Back in the old days those two men would have been dead.

You can't get much more "old days" than Soyuz. It's basically a refined mid-1960s spacecraft design sitting on top of about a 2nd generation descendant of the German V-2 rocket.

The basic design of a capsule on top of a rocket with an escape rocket to pull it away in an emergency is good one, which is why we used it in both Mercury and Apollo, and will use it again for the new generation of spacecraft NASA is developing.

"A MIRACLE!!!~! Thank you, GOD!!"

No, not a miracle and not God either. It was a fail safe mechanism designed and built by RUSSIAN engineers. Sorry about that!

Just curious, are You a nonbeliever, scientologist or atheist?

Yes the man made Escape System did work like it was Designed to. It’s a damned good thing it did. I’ll bet if these 2 Space Dude’s [1] [2] were asked if They were Praying and/or Thanked God, the answer from both would be YES !

[1] Space Dude’s is My Code words for: 1 Cosmonaut and 1 Astronaut.
[2] Had this been a Female(s) My Code words would be Space Dudett(s)

I’m going to go out on a limb here and call the 21G’s happened when the Escape System pulled the Soyuz Capsule off and away from the rest of the Launch Vehicle that was lumbering along at a mear 4,970 MPH because to escape from the about to go BOOM part !!! you have to make NO BOOMY part go way faster than the about to go BOOMY part.

In total Soyuz rockets have been launched 745 times of which 21 have failed. Thirteen of those failures have been since 2010, calling into question the continued reliability of the rocket.

21 out of 745 is 2.82% failure rate, I guess that’s not to bad...sort of.

34 launches since 2010-Present with 13 failures, that’s 38.23% failure rate, Hmmmm Confucius say He no ‘rickey lecent flailure ‘late, NO RIDE Russian go BOOMYUZ FIRE CRACKER

Almost forgot- I’ll go with the 9G’s was encountered during the actual Capsule Reentry.

Fighter Pilots these days can pull 7-9G’s fairy often since They have GSuits.

IIRC F-16 computers are still programmed to limit maneuvers to 9G to keep the pilots from blacking out due to GLOC (G-induced Loss Of Consciousness). A transient 21G load from the escape system firing is survivable.

OK Thank You, I didn't know about the Gsafety Programing Software. If We can find a way to grease up My sides and stuff My fat a$$ into the back seat of Thunderbird 7 and belt Me in (and set Me up with a spare O2 mask just in case I do actually puke) it would be My pleasure to be GTest FReeper and see how I do.

Peanut Butter

The 21G I was pretty sure of. On one of the N.Y. Limo Crash Threads I actually did some calculations to give People some reference info because they were questioning all the deaths so I gave so basic info on Race Car crashes and survival vs the Limo. It took Me about an hour to do it but I had the 1.5 year old Grandson crawling all over Me wanting the phone to look at "DOGGIE! PICS" because it's more fun to pester Me that PLAY WITH THE REAL "DOGGIE!
