Under banners: Without good work, no good climate! We are speaking out for our jobs, as many as 20,000 mine workers took part in demonstrations organized by the IG BCE and Verdi trade unions on Wednesday in Bergheim near Cologne, Germany.
IG BCE President Michael Vassiliadis has been a member of the coal commission since the summer. He called for a more respectful approach toward mine workers, akin to the attitude shown environmentalists campaigning to save the ancient Hambach forest.
The actions of forest conservationists are given maximum understanding, Vassiliadis told the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. But employees concerns are often ignored.
In Germany, there are about 100,000 jobs dependent on coal-fired power generation, Vassiliadis said.
About 20,000 people are directly employed in the brown coal industry in Germany, according to Germanys Federal Association for Brown Coal.
Over the coming weeks, the federal governments coal commission is to draw up a plan to phase out coal-fired power stations, which will also take account of the loss of jobs. [ ]
Facing a coal exit, the employees fear for their jobs and took to the streets in a loud but peaceful protest.

Germany - soon to be powered by unicorn farts.
morons. Well, more for the rest of us then I guess, right?
I feel bad for the average German. Their leadership is a ushering in a new age of watermelon Marxist feudalism while at the same time giving away their country to Muslim invaders. My advice to the Germans, rise up and kill every socialist that you can get your hands on.
Who will build our Porsche Turbo-S models?
They vote for this scheisse. The average German voter has long voted for soft socialism, freeloading off of America for their national defense (and cheap pharmaceuticals and medical devices), envirowackoism, multiculturalism and lots of other leftist hobby horses. Well now they’re seeing the consequences and its too late to turn back. They did it to themselves.
For a smart and capable people, they can be awfully awfully naive and stupid. I say this as one who is part German and who grew up with the language and who lived there twice. Individually, Germans are great. Collectively, they’re an effing disaster.
Didn’t they agree to phase out nuclear power after the Fukushima accident in Japan?
Not so much agree to and not so much “phase out”. The Merkel government just decided to and abruptly shut down all the nuclear power plants in the country.....which have zero carbon emissions which they claim they’re so concerned about.
So instead they’re now that much more dependent on Russian gas.....yet tell America (who they hate) that it has to pay for their defense against.....against.....wait for it.....Russia! Because they don’t want to pay for their own defense. Instead they want to shovel money at Russia.
They’re also totally committed Gaia Worshipers who routinely chastise those beastly Americans for pulling out of the Paris Agreement....while their emissions are going up and while they’re planning to bulldoze an ancient forest to make way for more coal mining. Meanwhile, America’s emissions are going down, yes down thanks to frakking and shifting over from burning coal to burning natural gas.
Oh but they’re oh so moral and more civilized and righteous about everything. Just ask them.
Sorry guys...you voted for Angela M Obama, now you get a taste of the US went through. Between the Muslim invasion and President Trump nailing your country to the wall over NATO and trade, you are in for a rough time.
The average Kraut IS a socialist.
Radio talk show host Dennis Prager has an axiom: Whatever Germany does, do the opposite.
and, if you like coal, you are a nazi?
25 Oct: Handelsblatt: Coal commission calls for surge in investment to offset coal phaseout
By Klaus Stratmann
Germanys coal commission, a panel of politicians and energy experts set up by the government to help organize the phaseout of coal-fired power generation, recommended massive investment in the regions that will be hit. They warn that failure to do so could cause social upheaval, especially in the former communist east...
Just last week, the eastern states alone Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Brandenburg demanded 60 billion in federal aid to cover the phaseout of lignite mining...
There are fears that job losses could boost support for the far right in affected regions, especially in the east where coal is the main industry in some parts...
The Alternative for Germany party, the leading opposition party, has garnered support in those regions by questioning whether humans are accelerating global warming...
The commission, which is also drafting a timetable for exiting coal, said structural funds shouldnt just go towards economic projects but also into measures to develop civil society activities, quality of life and soft location factors.
It said a successful structural policy could help safeguard the liberal democratic order in the east, which saw the worst neo-Nazi rioting in a generation in the town of Chemnitz in August...
More than ***30,000 miners, coal power station employees and industrial workers protested against the phaseout and job security in Bergheim, near Cologne in western Germany...
And power station operators Uniper and Steag warned against rapid cutbacks in coal, saying it would make Germany vulnerable to power outages...

unicorns you say? 😁
coal is clean. There is this myth of pollution that has Saturday
ted this culture. Any form of energy that uses a fuel emits co2 gas and carbon monoxide. The fact is coal today is clean and I don’t buy into this hysteria.
CO2 is not a pollutant. It’s plant food. What percentage of CO2 is produced by man?
Russian natural gas will put Germany under Putins thumb.
No nukes. No coal.
Putin will be grinning ear to ear.
It's been tried.
Pinochet comes to mind. A few thousand.
