Dogs are 'no more intelligent' than cats say experts (no matter how much of a clever boy [tr]

It may seem from a dog's friendly demeanour and ability to perform tricks that they are smarter than most animals but a new study suggests this is not the case.

Psychologists from Exeter and Canterbury University examined the cognitive abilities of 'man's best friend' when compared with other animals - including cats.

Experts concluded that canines do not possess particularly higher intelligence than their feline rivals, as well as a number of other creatures.

Researchers used data on observations of the behaviour of dogs, cats, wolves and chimpanzees to see if pooches possessed any specific special skills.

They found that dog's mental faculties are not exceptional compared to other species and were even bested in many categories.

Why is the ability to be trained the measure of intelligence? If that's the measure, dogs are smarter than many humans.

Perhaps dogs are trainable because they have a stronger need for positive feedback (i.e. praise) from humans.

And did you ever hear of a cat rescuing Timmy when he fell in the well?
= = =

Neither the cat nor Lassie fell into the well.

Timmy did.

Sorry, but owned many of both... and in the general case, dogs are far more intelligent than cats.

Some cats are smarter than some dogs, but to blanketly claim they are, on average equally intelligent animals is nonsense.

A very “smart” cat, is about on par with a mid range intelligent dog.... but the average cat is at to slightly above a very dumb dog.

Love cats, but no question that dogs are much smarter.

Cats run mostly on hard-wired instinct. Dogs think much more.

Dogs are smart enough to learn that Man is their best friend.

That is because wolves are pack animals. Teamwork is a specialty of theirs.

No wonder I like dogs! I can relate: my friends and I were quite the pack animals in high school. We were always on the hunt for the best foxes...

Cats seem more intelligent they make humans their servants in return for doing nothing.

Exactly.

Three thousand years ago Egyptians worshiped cats as gods. They have never forgotten.

I once saw a dog save a child, it recognized the danger the child was in and took decisive action to save him. A cat would have barely cared enough to watch.

We have to spell or speak pig latin in front of our cats sometimes when we’re discussing them. They’ve picked up on quite a bit of our vocabulary.
