LONG ISLAND, New York (WABC) -- Friday marks the 25-year anniversary of a deadly shooting on a Long Island Rail Road train.
A man from Brooklyn named Colin Ferguson opened fire inside the commuter train to Hicksville on December 7, 1993.
Six passengers were killed and 19 others were hurt.
Ferguson is serving a 315-year prison sentence.
Survivors of the deadly shooting are still comforting each other a quarter of a century later to talk about the day the gunfire rang out and how their lives have changed.

Hard to believe this was 25 years ago. It was pretty darn shocking for its time.
Back before the media glorified random mass shootings into a regular occurrence.
My son had got off at Merillon Ave on the train prior to this one——just missed it.

Knew someone who had just walked off that train and another woman who was shot but survived.

I remember hearing about this attack while listening to the news on the radio.
The way the PC media reported this crime, they made it sound like a white shooter had randomly started killing blacks, instead of the other way around.

At least until he kills a guard or prisoner, then they can tack on another 20 years...
I watched at least some of the trial. The killer represented himself. He would ask the survivors and witnesses about the shooter as if he were someone else, and they would say things to the effect of “I saw YOU shoot...” It was horrible they had to put up with that evil man.
And Carolyn McCarthy, rat gun grabber, leveraged her husbands dead corpse into a house seat.
I remember Rush Limbaugh saying “if Bernard Goetz was sitting next to Carolyn McCarthy’s husband, he’d still be alive today.”
Well, he actually represented himself, but the judge appointed two attorneys as "advisors," one of whom was Kunstler, the other being Ron Kuby, who at the time had a radio program on WABC with Curtis Sliwa.
Kuby is a far-lefty like Kunstler, whom he once worked for. Both had long hair. Kunstler is no longer among the living, but Kuby is still with us, and still looks like a hippy.
They assisted Ferguson with his "black rage drove me nuts" defense, which Ferguson objected to, ultimately firing both of them. Ferguson's defense was that he was completely innocent, that another man grabbed his gun and did the shooting, even though among the survivors there were multiple eyewitnesses who testified under oath that they saw him shooting the victims. In some cases, the witnesses had actually been shot by Ferguson, but survived.
Mr. Ferguson got LWOP, and has to serve a minimum of 315 years, eight months, of which 23 years, nine months, and 21 days is behind him.
That means he has 291 years, ten months, and 10 days left to go. If he makes it October 17, 2310, he can walk out the prison door a free man.
Of course, they may add some time because he cold-cocked serial killer Joel Rifkin for talking too loud on the phone. Both currently reside in Dannemora, NY, at the Clinton Correctional Facility.
With a good lawyer he might have gotten it down to life.

Wikipedia, at least, gives the motive as "Racism".
A correctional facility named for the country's foremost felons. I know what the name is actually in reference to, but I can dream, can't I? :-)

BTW, the encounter with Joel Rifkin is important as more than a curiosity.
During the encounter, Colin Ferguson actually admitted to the LIRR murders, even though he had denied murdering anyone many times in court and to police. He did no in a bizarre exchange of "my crime was bigger than your crime" taunts with Rifkin.
Before hitting Rifkin, Ferguson bragged that had killed "six devils" while Rifkin had "only killed women."
This was a strange claim in several ways, not the least of which is the fact that three of the six people Ferguson killed were women.

Not the nicest dude (narcissistic sales guy) but lucky
Ferguson was stark,raving mad-——and I had forgotten all about Rifkin.
