I have had two Belgian Sheepdogs, currently have one living, and one Belgian Tervuren. Pretty amazing dogs. These are the long coat variants of the Malinois and are better suited for here in the high Colorado Rockies. Mine have guarded the home against large black bears on many occasions.
I’ve been working Belgian sheepdogs for years. You always know where they live, the carpet is black.
They are my pick of all of the working bite dogs but they shed worse than any dogs I’ve ever had on a leash.
My border terrier does not shed, but then he cannot scale a 20 ft fence nor bite a mans adams apple off for fun.
So impressive!! I didn’t know dogs could do that!
Will this be as good a house dog as my standard poodle? LOL
Looks to me like they’re great dogs for owners who are strict with them and teach them discipline, so they don’t become liabilities. I met a former prison guard who had one. It had been trained by prisoners under a program for that. Very well trained.
My son had a Teruvian. Beautiful elegant animal. Gentle, and really super attached to him. He was devastated when he had her age related suffering required that she be euthanized.
I think the secret is socializing them to other people and other dogs/animals. They can sense fear in you and will react accordingly when needed without the attack training which is suitable for most non-LEO owners.
I pity the squirrels.
I pretty much agree with the temperament writeup. Mine have been 90 lb lapdogs to my family. It takes them a while to warm up to new people inside the home where they are more protective, but outside the home they are much more accepting of new people.
Holy smokes! Imagine being in a car and a Malinois is shooting through the window like a cruise missile.
My first Belgian Sheepdog went with me on mountain climbing trips in Colorado. I had a harness for him so I could rope him up on difficult sections. On even the most difficult sections we climbed, he never slipped. We probably climbed 40 14’ers in Colorado and many others that were difficult, but lower.
My German shepherd rescue will get about 5-10 Belgian Malinois along with the 400 German shepherds brought in per year. We call these them Malin-gators. Only the most experienced volunteers are allowed to handle the Belgian Malinois.
My GSDs are not slouches in the shedding department.

My 14 yr old Belgian Mal is the best friend I have in this life . I hope we can go together. I would miss her too much .
Damn...I used to do stuff like that....
And think dog's ought outlive humans....
I've put down many friends,,,and family...
But of course....I have two best friends...once again....
I really want a German Shepherd, but with young grandchildren around, I can’t take a chance on an unknown adult dog.
