It kind of demonstrates something I thought about, although certainly I’m not advocating the level of extreme seen in Cambodia during the Khmer Rouge years:

Maybe the cure for peoples’ love of Socialism, is to actually force them to endure living under it for a few years.

I’m trying to think a country where socialism has ushered in an era of wealth and opportunity for the common people in just a single generation.

Russia?
Cuba?
Venezuela?

Still thinking ...

The polled people in different countries to gauge the population’s views on Capitalism.

The country that had the most favorable view of Capitalism amongst the population: Vietnam

Still thinking ...

"It'll work this time!"

A problem with socialism is that all the people cheerleading for it envision themselves as part of the ruling apparatchik. Nobody ever says, "You guys run things from behind a desk. I'll go work in the coal mines! Yay socialism!"

In the US Mr. Lim would be reviled by the American Left and be considered a right wing Trump type.

Cambodia is the Democratic party’s playbook today: Kill anyone who could remotely oppose them.

I’m not disrespecting what Cambodia has achieved, but its not that special

They started from an extremely low, even primitive level. The country was at war for decades, then faced an absolutely extreme, insane Communism for several years. Then they were invaded by Vietnam.

Cambodia is still in no way ruled by wise, enlightened, incorruptible libertarians. In fact, quite the opposite. But remove those previous extremes, and any society will start to find its back to normal in a relatively short time.

You are correct. Yes they've come a long way from the khmer rouge days, but they're also still a basketcase and miserable economic backwater that can't seem to get out of a peculiar sociological rut. Hun Sen was/is just another strongman to keep the tenuous domestic peace. The ticket would be modernization and attracting foreign investment but they remain isolated largely by choice.

My son works in Asia and love to vacation in unusual places. He had a great time in Cambodia. He also enjoyed Laos, which he said was very quiet and restful. In contrast to Vietnam which he says is the noisiest country he’s ever been to, and he’s been to many.

and why not? the people cheering for it believe themselves better than the average American and know what’s best for everyone.

Not for one minute do they think they’ll miss out on any of the goodies or opportunities available. They’ll be unaffected by any unpleasant side affects.

the hillbillies and slobs will go without, but that’s fine.

".... Capitalism works. Every time it’s tried...."

Socialism fails every time it's tried.

As Milton Friedman, the famed economist repeatedly said (paraphrased),

".... In the only cases in recorded history where the masses have escaped grinding poverty is where there is capitalist system and free trade....There is no alternative way so far discovered of improving the lot of the ordinary people that can hold a candle to the productive activities that are unleashed by a capitalist, free enterprise system...."

Those who choose to ignore history are destined to repeat it.

Just an observation.

Mr. Lim and his fellow countrymen learned to work hard from an early age. Not only did they work hard, but they worked hard for others, with minimal compensation.

Today, Mr. Lim and his fellow countrymen continue to work hard, as they learned in their youth. But now they work for themselves and are allowed to keep the fruits of their labor.

Compare that to the USA where portions of our population have never worked at all and yet feel they are entitled to the fruits of other peoples labors.
