THE CHINESE WERE WHITE – UNTIL WHITE MEN CALLED THEM YELLOW
South China Morning Post ^ | 02/03/2019 | BY MICHAEL KEEVAK

How did East Asians come to be referred to as yellow-skinned? It was the result of a series of racial mappings of the world and had nothing to do with the actual colour of people’s skin.

In fact, when complexion was mentioned by an early Western traveller or missionary or ambassador (and it very often wasn’t, because skin colour as a racial marker was not fully in place until the 19th century), East Asians were almost always called white, particularly during the period of first modern contact in the 16th century. And on a number of occasions, even more revealingly, the people were termed “as white as we are”.

The term yellow occasionally began to appear towards the end of the 18th century and then really took hold of the Western imagination in the 19th. But by the 17th century, the Chinese and Japanese were “darkening” in published texts, gradually losing their erstwhile whiteness when it became clear they would remain unwilling to participate in European systems of trade, religion, and international relations.

Calling them white, in other words, was not based on simple perception either and had less to do with pigmentation than their presumed levels of civilisation, culture, literacy, and obedience (particularly if they should become Christianised).

Swedish botanist and physician Carl Linnaeus decided that varieties of homo sapiens could be similarly separated into four continental types, one of which was called homo asiaticus. The colour of that group, he said, was fuscus, which can be best translated as “dark”. This was in 1735.

Evidently there was some difficulty deciding on a precise colour for Asian Man, since the other three types, European, African, and American, could be “unproblematically” identified according to already accepted stereotypes of white, black, and red.

Nineteenth-century medical research frequently attempted to define the ‘yellow’ race as embodying physical conditions that distinguished them from Caucasians, including the ‘Mongolian eyefold’ (a fold of skin covering the canthus or inner corner of the eye)

People—especially non-Europeans—are far too obsessed with skin color. What they should be obsessed with is individual liberty.

I once remember long ago observing an English class for a group of Japanese children. When given the task of drawing a picture of themselves, the boys all picked the red crayons for skin color.

Most anthropologists will tell you there is no such thing as race. The human condition is a continuum. There are no distinct races.

precise colour for Asian Man

****************

There’s a man who lives a life of danger
He travels in our midst, but he’s a stranger
Los Alamos beware
It’s not the Russian bear
Odds are he was sent from Mainland China

Now they have technologies to start with
Things that we would never dare to part with
He grabbed our warhead tricks
With secret spy chopsticks
Then he sent them back to Mainland China

Secret Asian Man
Secret Asian Man
A Chinese Austin Powers
On a mission from Chairman Mao

Liberals also call Hispanics non-white even if they have blond hair and blue eyes.

Agreed.

Hitler and Farrakhan are both wrong.

Identity is when we use our names, not our colors.

The progressive definition of race is any ethnic or religious group that can be organized as victims.

Does it really matter what word we use for obvious differences between major groups? Races or clines whatever? Any trained professional can take a human skeleton and tell us what race he is from by teeth, skull capacity, etc. We have entered an era when we as a society will deny scientific facts for the sake of comfort and convenience of one tribe over another.
Some tribes jump better and some tribes are smarter. Fact.

But objective concepts of race can be formed in the same way that objective concepts of different colors, which are also a continuum. One must observe similarities and differences among people and group them together as units of one group or another based on those similarities and differences.

I was just thinking this morning that I could probably go to China and see a TV ad without a Black person in it.

You can't here anymore.

My granddaughter is 1/4 Han (my wife), 1/4 Scots-Irish (me), 1/4 Northern Italian (other grandmother) and 1/4 Mohawk (other grandfather).

In the summertime, she really darkens. One summer when she was about 5 years old she was sitting on my lap, her darkened legs against my very pale skin, and my son-in-law remarked - "Boy, honey, are you dark!"

She held her arm up, looked at it, and said "I'm golden!"

American liberals are the most race-obsessed group since the Nazis. Every single issue and thought is thoroughly analyzed to figure out where it has the most utility in the battle to divide by race.

I don't see the point of this article.   Xenophobia and Bigotry never involved logic.

My Long-dead ex (May God rest his conservative soul) traveled the world on business and often talked about how fascinating it was the skin colors change on a continuum, from north to south, east to west. A Florida Gator to the max, he did not have a single racist bone in his body.

So anyway, what’s the big fuss about color?
