...The government, they felt, wasnt doing enough to protect the lake. And so they wondered: What if the lake could protect itself? The idea they hatched that night ultimately resulted in a special election, which had the citizens of Toledo voting Tuesday on a very unusual question: Should Lake Erie be granted the legal rights normally reserved for a person? The measure passed easily, which means citizens will be able to sue on behalf of the lake whenever its right to flourish is being contravened that is, whenever its in danger of major environmental harm...If the stakes felt almost unbearably high for the activists who pushed for the Lake Erie Bill of Rights, its because this was the first rights-based legislation aimed at protecting a whole US ecosystem: the lake, its tributaries, and the many species that live off it. The law isnt without precedent, though. Its part of the nascent rights of nature movement, which has notched several victories in the past dozen years.

Seems like another nonsense that will have to go to higher courts
Seriously? The people of toledo are dumb, really really dumb. Just plain stupid. really really stupid. Y’all is dumb.. dumb dumb dumb. Smh.
“What if the lake could protect itself?”
Well, from all the stories of boat accidents, I’m sure that it has more than enough fire power!
If Lake Erie has the same legal rights as a person, then it’s only a matter of time before someone with a smart lawyer sues the lake over a drowning or boating accident ... and takes possession of all its revenue potential when they win the lawsuit.
Minneapolis, all of Minnesota, the left coast, about seven major cities, parts of Florida ..... a good bit of Michigan, Washington DC ......
More proof that liberalism is a mental disorder.
Don’t you love liberals? Give a lake “person” status, but deny it to unborn babies. Liberalism really is a mental disorder.”
Yes, but unlike babies, does it have a “right to life” if the lake cannot breathe, move, feel, or think? It can get a lawyer, but not a gun? What pronoun is a lake?
Well if it’s a victim of sexual discrimination at the workplace, it should be afforded all avenues given to humans :)
Are people really this stupid or gullible? Will they feel the same way when jobs are lost, taxes go up, and they lose access or use of the lake?
These idiots vote in other elections too
What could go wrong here?
simple, just declare it “unborn” and do whatever you want to the lake.
This is more proof that the left is completely agenda-driven, and couldn’t care less about the means.
They are quick to confer personhood to a lake; all the while fighting against the long-standing legal status of Corporations. The left are champions for the “Corporations are not people”, while Unions are “people”, in their march against Citizens United.
Now they’ll demand taxpayer funded abortions & gender reassignment surgery for the lake?
Voting Democrat no doubt.
>>Dont you love liberals? Give a lake person status, but deny it to born babies.
They are killing them after delivery these days.
This brings up the Michigan-Toledo War of 1835. Michigan fought Ohio over the possession of Toledo. Michigan won! Ohio was stuck with Toledo.
(for all you history buffs, Ohio won. However, in compensation, Michigan was given the Upper Peninsula. We gained "Da UPpers".)
