A US warship has essentially been quarantined at sea for over two months and has been unable to make a port call due to an outbreak of a viral infection similar to mumps.
Twenty-five sailors and Marines aboard the USS Fort McHenry amphibious warship have been diagnosed with parotitis, which causes symptoms similar to mumps, according to US military officials.
Until CNN asked about the incident, the US military had not disclosed it. The illness first broke out in December, with the most recent case being reported on March 9.

So who will they choose to blame for this? Those pesky anti-vaxers thousands of miles away? This begs the question, how effective are the vaccines? Or could the vaccines be the cause? Yes, I'm aware, the pathogens are dead, so they say.

For the record, it is not "parotitis," but rather
parotiditis, an inflammation of the parotid glands that can be caused by either viral or bacterial infection.
MSNBC. Come on, people. Those guys are idiots.

All seven hundred and three military personnel aboard the ship have received measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) booster vaccinations, according to the US Navy's Fifth Fleet headquartered in Bahrain.
Decidedly not the anti-vaccination crowd, I guess.

Yes, that’s my point. Here in the homeland, every cough, sneeze or sniffle lately has been blamed on the anti vaxers.
Oh, and Trump.
To: 60Gunner
Parotitis is a perfectly acceptable spelling, used by Wikipedia, medical dictionaries, NIH and others.

Sounds like someone picked-up a contagious case of “parotiditis” while on shore leave. Nasty stuff.

I think there’s a standing order in the military that if you are operational you get vaccinated.
And perhaps (or at least when) I was in the service many years ago there was a push for everybody operational or nonoperational, due to the fact that at any time anyone could become operational.
And I do recall people trying to circumvent that standing order and were not successful, and in the case of some, they were asked to leave.

I was thinking of the infectious disease flag that ships raise to warn others that they have not been certified by the local port authority as being safe. Formerly, the all-yellow flag “Q” was used to indicate a quarantine (”yellow jack” for yellow fever, giving that disease that particular nickname). The “Q” flag is now used to indicate a request for the port authority to come aboard and confirm that all is well. The yellow and black flag “L” is now used to indicate a current quarantine.
