The FBI was allowed to comb through the information in a bid to identify crime suspects, igniting confidentiality concerns and privacy fears. Now, the gene-testing service has announced it will let customers bar law enforcement from accessing their data.
Additionally, law enforcement agencies will need to go through a "separate process" when uploading their own files to the database in search of matches, and this can only be done in an effort to identify a deceased person or suspects involved in homicide or sexual assault.
...Giving customers the opportunity to opt out of giving the FBI access is an important step in defining privacy rules in this murky area, but it still puts the onus on the customer to manage their data, when some would argue the company should be protecting it by default.

I have a bridge for sale.
ya, they will just ask the FBI for the data back.
FTDNA rocks. They are a great company and I’d gladly donate my DNA to catch a criminal.
GEDmatch already has enough DNA to identify 1/2 the people in the US. If they don’t have your DNA they have a relatives. The cat is out of the bag.
Or “click here to unsubscribe” spam emails...
I was thinking it would be interesting to get a sample from some psycho killer on death row, submit that, and then sue the crap out of them for sharing it with the FBI or whoever.
Or...I could opt out of participation in the DNA numbskullery scam altogether and avoid the problem entirely...Nobody can “share” (with the Federal Bureau of Incineration or any other entity) what they don’t have...
The easiest way to opt out of anyone getting your DNA is to just never voluntarily give it to anyone.
And to think millions of people pay ancestry type outfits just to give it to the FBI. People this dumb deserve to be in all the databases.
At a higher price, because WHAT HAVE THEY GOT TO HIDE?
The government cannot resist looking at information that is not theirs. The Constitution means nothing.
I sent mine in and had a search conducted
I was surprised...
