There's Something About Space That's Triggering Herpes in Astronauts
Science Alert ^ | 18 Mar 2018 | JON CHRISTIAN

Posted on 03/17/2019 7:09:26 PM PDT by DUMBGRUNT

Tests show that dormant herpes viruses reactivate in more than half the astronauts who travel on the Space Shuttle and International Space station, according to new NASA research - a phenomenon the space agency says could pose problems for deep space missions.

..."In keeping with this, we find that astronaut's immune cells - particularly those that normally suppress and eliminate viruses - become less effective during spaceflight and sometimes for up to 60 days after."

well we were made to live on earth. human beings trying to exist in outer space can only lead to problems. simple as that, but NASA and silly people will keep wasting money trying.

Radiation exposure. Anyone who gets cold sores knows that exposure to too much strong sunlight will trigger them.

Not obvious to everyone, so that’s why I said “JFTR”.

Some Info:
5 myths about herpes, busted

"Myth 2: We didn’t have sex, so there’s no way I have genital herpes.

"Herpes is spread by skin-to-skin contact with someone who carries the virus. That means you can get herpes by touching, kissing, and oral, vaginal, or anal sex. People who carry herpes don’t always know they have the virus, and they may not have any visible sores on their skin."

Hate to break it to you, but you probably have herpes.

"Turns out, nearly two-thirds of the global population this link opens in a new tab is infected with herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), according to a recent report released by the World Health Organization (WHO). The WHO researchers estimated that 3.7 billion people under the age of 50 are infected with HSV-1, which is best known as a cause of cold sores.

Another 417 million people worldwide aged 15-49 have HSV-2, the type most often thought of as a sexually transmitted disease. But get this--140 million adults have genital infections caused by HSV-1, meaning half a billion people could sexually transmit either virus"

Herpes may lay dormant for years

"Most people who’ve been infected with HSV don’t know they have the infection because they have no signs or symptoms or because their signs and symptoms are so mild."

There are factors that have nothing human bodies in zero gravity and disease, and not *ahem* other behavior. There's the weakened immune system due to loss of gravity. A closed environment which makes it easier to get sick. A disease that is more common than people think, is not exclusively sexually transmitted, and can stay dormant for years without the infected knowing.

Real space ships are more crowded then a submarine and there is no gravity to help protect the crew from each other's breath, sweat, or water leaking from the shower. It makes sense that communicable diseases will be more communicable in a zero gravity environment.

Trying space travel and other explorations like inner space maybe outside of our capabilities but it also points out vulnerabilities we may be able to conquer. NASA has a huge budget (we pay for it) They may be able to use information to cure viruses instead of driving them to dormancy to come back later. I doubt it but killing viruses is a good goal. Inhabiting Mars I’m not sold on, but heck I’m an old fart.

I was just thinking how much I’ve been enjoying these funny posts which reminded me of the hilarity on threads back in the Clinton years (which sadly got deleted when JR changed over the system c.2000.)

There are nonsexual strains of herpes. If you get canker sores in your mouth every once in awhile, thats a nonsexual strain of herpes.

Well they also have higher rates of cancer too, partly because of higher radiation and also the immune system is weaker and may not take out the cancer cells as they could in normal earth gravity and more radiation protection on earth.

I had chicken pox in 2nd grade. I had shingles in my mid 30s. My doctor said I was the youngest person he had seen with shingles. My dad and I had it at the same time. We had visited my mom in hospital. It turned out her hospital roommate had chicken pox. Shingles was bad very painful on torso.

It’s not like the best doctors will be available to treat astronauts going where no man has gone before.

You sayin' Dr. McCoy wasn't one of the best doctors?

Seems like I remember reading everyone has the herpes virus but only some people show symptoms. If that’s the case then this is as they said; an immune compromised system due to space travel for reasons unknown at this point.
