When Chinese giant salamanders are injured, they discharge white mucus from glands on their skin. As new research shows, this sticky salamander goo makes for an excellent medical glue, sealing wounds and encouraging them to heal. (snip) Tests on pigs and rats showed that the compound worked well and was nicely flexibility. That said, it was slightly less durable than other medical glues. Overall, however, it performed better than commonly used medical adhesives. Using the glue, the scientists were able to close bleeding skin incisions in less than 30 seconds. The compound also contributed to wound healing, resulting in practically no scar formation. (Snip) Study co-author and Harvard Medical School scientist Yu Shrike Zhang told New Scientist, You dont have to kill any animals, you just once in a while very gently scratch their skins to harvest the mucus, adding that its very sustainable, and you can obtain this adhesive for a long time.

How could I not ping you. ;-)
Soooo... market it as “Godzilla Goo”... like the old “Gorilla Snot” Glue (now renamed Gorilla Glue).

Whatever happened to that research into why injuries to the skin of frogs heal so well even in an aquatic environment full of all kinds of nasty microbes? I thought that was going to lead to some sort of super antibiotic.
Back when I used to chop garlic (before Chinese chopped garlic took over everything) I noticed on several occasions that knife cuts healed completely and with amazing speed when the cut finger was covered in garlic juice. Of course it stung quite a lot too, but not as much as the merthiolate my parents doused me with when I was a child of five or six.
Ok, they can freeze dry it to make a powder.
I had visions of every hospital keeping a 6 foot 140 lb salamander in a tank near the emergency room.
They should synthesize it..................
Love Traffic!..................The band nobody ever heard of.............
Goo, not “poo.”
I read an article in Scientific American a couple of months back about a natural antibiotic found in dolphins, who sometimes get significant wounds in fights with sharks. Apparently it fostered healing without either infection or scar tissue.
Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004.
Who didn’t know this? :)
The scientists should be able to synthesize it by the barrel..............
I don’t think they even sell that stuff anymore..........
I’ll look for “Salamander Mucus” at the hardware store next time I’m there. I’m thinking it must be next to the “Super Glue” which works well for closing wounds.
Wow! You are good! I was a huge Traffic fan fifty years ago when that song came out, but never in a million years would I remember that and tie it to his thread. Color me impressed!
Yes, but they weren’t a big top 40 commercial band, just made great music!...........
Hell, no! Contained mercury!
I think the thimerosol (vaccine preservative) that people think is related to autism is pretty similar to merthiolate.
One of the things we take for granted is that such potions are out of our life now.
Well let’s face it, there’s not a heck of a lot of songs out there with the word “Goo” in it.
I cut myself pretty good while fixing dinner a long time ago. Maybe a 1/4 inch deep. Stuck my fingers in a bowl of pickled sliced jalapenos. Hurt like crazy. Next day the cut was healed over. Pink skin, no scab.
Had the same experience washing some fresh comfrey root too.
Without the burning pain though.
I’ll have to get me a few bottles of this stuff for when I start my professional fighting career.
