If ever traveling to Belize, take this tip when you land. After going through immigration, when at the baggage claim, make a short trip to the duty free store, get your booze or smokes then get your bags. continue to customs. there is a line for folks with duty free goods, usually empty. They will ask for receipt for your goods, ask a couple questions and then be waved through while all your fellow passengers are stuck in line while they poke through your luggage. I was told about this trick from an expat that lives there. We tried it last week when we went to visit, works like a charm.
Good tip.
Now for another one. If you have to go through security in Hong Kong, never get in line where there are women wearing burkas ahead of you. The ALWAYS have something that is not allowed and they will argue about it endlessly with the security staff.
A longer line is a better choice.

The old whorehouse on stilts was out by the airport and the Brit jungle warfare school and Harrier site
It hadn’t ceased being called British Honduras for long and the Guats were making incursions hence the Brit presence and whorehouse
The escarpment north of Belmopan was filled with mennonites growing weed which flew north across the Gulf from their grass strips
Mothers was in Belize city
I saw a man shot to death trying to rob someone in front of there
The Fort George was the only hotel worth a damn..
There was an air conditioner one in San Ignacio
None of the small cays were developed and you boated from Belize City to the vaunted Blue Hole
Chetumal Mexico was the closest town of any significance
Smitty rented out Land Rovers Series and 110s and Jeeps which for the right money you could drop in Panama or Matamoros
Which I did sight seeing wars and stuff
I haven’t been back since 1990

Same thing works if you have anything to declare. So, bring something to declare. I once brought head parts for Travis’s boat. Got me through the short line.

Buddy goes from Ridgewood, NJ, to Long Island driving around the north side of the city. Says it’s about 19 miles...takes 7 hours.
Third world countries are so fun to visit. The USA have Pakistanis and Indians running the stop and robs, in Belize it is the Chinese. OH, And watch those Speed Bumps!.
I would be interested in going to Belize. English is the main language, they have the rule of law, great beaches, the 2nd largest coral reef in the world and Mayan ruins.
Not too expensive and yes, most speak english and they do take US dollars. Also the food is great. But stick to the bottled water.
Years ago we had plans to go to Belize. Before leaving, it was slammed by a hurricane. I suppose it is time to try again.
It’s worth the air fare, just stay out of Belize City, every where else is fine.

It’s NEVER taken me 7 hours to get anywhere.
It HAS taken me 2.5 hours to get from staten island to rockefeller plaza, but that was a very bad day and the average was an hour by express bus.
But I cannot comment on Ridgewood to Long Island.

I use to hitch hike around the country with that song in the back of my mind back in the late 60’s , along with “sitting on the dock of the bay” Great memories.
