People who eat vegan and vegetarian diets have a lower risk of heart disease and a higher risk of stroke, a major study suggests.
They had 10 fewer cases of heart disease and three more strokes per 1,000 people compared with the meat-eaters.
The research, published in the British Medical Journal, looked at 48,000 people for up to 18 years.
However, it cannot prove whether the effect is down to their diet or some other aspect of their lifestyle.
Diet experts said, whatever people's dietary choice, eating a wide range of foods was best for their health. What does this study add?
It analyses data from the EPIC-Oxford study, a major long-term research project looking at diet and health.
Half of participants, recruited between 1993 and 2001, were meat-eaters, just over 16,000 vegetarian or vegan, with 7,500 who described themselves as pescatarian (fish-eating).
They were asked about their diets, when they joined the study and again in 2010. Medical history, smoking and physical activity were taken into account,
Altogether, there were 2,820 cases of coronary heart disease (CHD) and 1,072 cases of stroke - including 300 haemorrhagic strokes, which happen when a weakened blood vessel bursts and bleeds into the brain.
The pescatarians were found to have a 13% lower risk of CHD than the meat-eaters, while the vegetarians and vegans had a 22% lower risk.
But those on plant-based diets had a 20% higher risk of stroke. The researchers suggested this could be linked to low vitamin B12 levels but said more studies were needed to investigate the connection.
It is also possible that the association may have nothing to do with people's diets and may just reflect other differences in the lives of people who do not eat meat.

Eat meat and get a heart attack.
Don’t eat meat and have a stroke.
Decisions, decisions.
You can get another heart. You can’t get another brain.
This vegan and non-vegan discussion is worthless.
Unless you divide this up and note folks who eat purely beef-products (no pork), or note folks who are primarily turkey/chicken folks, or note folks who eat meat three times a day but also eat seven helpings of fruit/vegetables throughout the day....these discussions go nowhere.
My grandfather lived to be 100 years old, consuming a fair amount of fatty pork throughout his life, but also drank a bottle of cherry liquor throughout each week. Added to his passion items...apple pie, apple sauce, and apple pudding.
Everything has their disadvantages (and everybody is going to die anyway).
I can live with that!.................
There’s no guarantee as to how long one will live, it’s a matter of making sure those final years don’t suck.
It’s probably the ones that use these terms to explain their eating disorder. You don’t hear about the anorexic girl any more, she’s a vegan now.
Humans are omnivores. Eat meat and vegetables. Known fact. Do what nature intended and youll be ok.
Follow fads, be sick.
It figures.
Read somewhere vegans have little wee wees...
You mean Steve Jobs could have lived?
Don’t wear a motorcycle helmet and become an organ donor.
Wear a motorcycle helmet and become a quadriplegic.
Decisions, decisions.
This is by a vegan doctor who has some great information that Vegans need to know.
I"m not a vegan. God clearly blessed meat for our consumption.
Their strokes probably occur as they head to the organic fruit and vegetable section, incensed passing the meat and dairy displays. I do know a couple vegans who quietly go about their business without a massive chip on their shoulders. I even try to include a couple dishes they can eat when I cook for church functions. And they’re grateful for the consideration. But those types seem to be the exception.
They may have claimed it was healthier, but really it is about a moral equivalence of humans and lower animals.
It may not be the veganism itself, it’s the physical stress involved in telling everybody on earth that they’re vegan. Exhausting!
