"My choice to rid myself of the artery clogging foods was the BEST decision in my life."

They aren't "artery clogging foods". Heart disease is not caused by an over-abundance of cholesterol.

"Although the benefits of lowering blood cholesterol in order to protect patients from premature death caused by myocardial infarction or stroke are undisputed"

This is very much disputed. In fact it's down right unscientific. There is no good science that says higher total cholesterol will lead to a heart attack. Never was.

LOW CARB / KETO PING!!!

Thanks Drango! Here’s Gary Taubes, who along with Nina are the two journalists who have went through all of the data to get to the bottom of what’s going on regarding obesity/diabetes.

I cannot eat vegan. I can’t be satisfied with plant protein, I eat to feel good and be strong. Vegan can’t do it. Tofu is the only plant based protein that works for me, and I do eat it maybe once a week, Korean style. I need animal protein to survive and thrive.

I found that to be the same for me, too. I tried a heavily plant based diet, not vegan, basically for the anti-inflammatory benefit, but I was tired all the time. When I add more meat protein it makes it a big difference. I’ll be curious to see if it also results in a higher albumin count next time I get a blood panel.

I used to have this argument with my primary care doc. My blood cholesterol was hovering around the zone where they want you to take statins, but I told him I preferred to try keeping it in check with diet.

His argument was that cholesterol is like paraffin, it makes your blood thicker, harder for your heart to push through small capillaries. And I should take the statins. But as long as my cholesterol was borderline I wouldn’t do it.

But one year despite my good diet my cholesterol soared. I think at one point it hit 400. I caved and began taking the dreaded statins.

Eventually it turned out that I had a kidney disease that makes me lose blood protein. To “compensate” for that lost protein my liver was cranking out a ton of cholesterol. Why that’s supposed to work is known only by livers. Anyway the excessive cholesterol wasn’t caused by my diet at all, and once the kidney disease was beaten into submission my cholesterol dropped below where it had started. I no longer take the statins because my numbers are fine.

Yet plants generally are inflammatory, not anti-inflammatory. Meat is anti-inflammatory. In fact there are some people that only eat meat because of the issues that plants cause them. I’m not suggesting you have to do that, but there are people that find they are better off avoiding plant food all together.

He was entirely wrong. It's not unusual for GPs to know nothing about the subject. They follow some guidelines and maybe had some vague training in medical school, but unless they put their own work into it they are going to have limited understanding of actual nutrition science, or the causes of heart disease.

It's not the level of total cholesterol. It's not even the LDL cholesterol. The amount of HDL and triglycerides seems to be significant because they correlate with other things going on, like insulin resistance. But even they aren't the cause, nor is your blood getting thicker.

Plants containing polyphenols are associated with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.

Meat protein is associated with Renal HyperFiltration, and protein leakage. Anti-inflammatory drugs can stop the RHF and protein leakage, suggesting that meat protein stresses the kidney through an inflammatory mechanism. Not a big deal if you have healthy kidneys, a big deal if you don’t.

Glad to hear you are OK, Pelham. I’m not totally anti-statin. I think for some people they can be wonderful. But when I see doctors claim 97% of people over 50 would benefit from them.....$$$$$$$$$.

"Plants containing polyphenols are associated with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects."

Polyphenals are positive, but not all plants are equal, and polyphenals come in a plant package with other things. The questions isn't whether one component is good. It's whether the whole package is good. Plants, as a category of food, can be inflammatory.

That's protein, and a keto diet is only moderate protein. It isn't a good idea to overdo protein, that's true. But the kidney effects are overstated. This came up earlier.
