The Toledo Lucas County Port Authority has confirmed that two people were killed when a cargo plane crashed just outside of the Toledo Express Airport early Wednesday morning. The Ohio State Highway Patrol identified the victims as Douglas R. Taylor, 72, and Donald C. Peterson Sr., 69, both of Laredo, Texas.
According to crews on the scene, that plane was a Convair cargo plane flying from Millington, Tennessee which crashed on top of at least two semis at Bubba's Auto and Deisel near the airport just after 2:30 AM Wednesday morning.
According to a release from the Ohio State Highway Patrol, "the plane, a Convair CV-440, was owned by Barker Aeromotive, Inc., and was loaded with automotive parts

For some reason it reminds me of Second Hand Lions.
The plane is at least as old as the pilots
The 440 first flew in 1955. We were still making spare parts for it at Convair, San Diego in the 90’s.
If it crashed on a heading parallel to the highway or street, probably sleepy and tired and mistook a roadway for the runway.
I rode on some Convair 440s. They were crappy planes in the 1960s. That being said, they probably should have had at least one person in the cockpit that wasn’t on Social Security.
“The pilots should have been retired at their age. I would not be surprised is the pilot was disoriented and tried to land at the truck stop. “
They weren’t airline pilots. You’re not an aviator are you?
Thats obvious
Nobody half their age knows what a 440 is,much less be able to fly it.
Runway 7/25 does nominally parallel Airport Highway (Ohio Route 2). The Ohio Turnpike crosses the east end of runway 25 at a nominal 45 degree angle. As near as I can figure, the crash site was on the east side of the OTP and in line with the runway.
Unless a lot has majorly changed since the last time I was in the area, there isn’t much out there that would be lighted at 0230 other than the runway and approach beacons so it is doubtful that the road was mistaken for the runway. Even if Bubba’s parking lot was lit, it is in no way shaped like a runway and it is about 3400 or more feet from the end of runway 25 and about 1000 feet from the first approach beacon..
And the reports say no black box recorders on the Convair 440 so investigators will be doing a lot of guesstimating.
