The War Of The Worlds FIRST LOOK! Long-legged aliens invade Earth to battle Eleanor Tomlinson [tr]
UK Daily Mail ^ | September 30, 2019 | Andrew Bullock

The BBC's highly-anticipated sci-fi drama, The War Of The Worlds, has dropped it's first trailer.

Veering away from the 2005 Hollywood version - which starred Tom Cruise, was helmed by Steven Spielberg and was set in the present day - the three-part series takes place in Edwardian England, harking more accurately back to the source text.

The novel - written by H. G. Wells and published in 1897 - sees martians, in the form of giant, spindly-legged machines - attack Earth, on hunt for resources.

Coolest “spaceships” ever...

Similar to the ones in “Robinson Crusoe On Mars”...

That’s what happens when there isn’t a Walmart Pharmacy or a CVS on your Home Planet.

The 2005 Spielberg version with Tom Cruise was a masterpiece.

One of the finest SciFi movies ever filmed.

This is actually set in Britain, in the 1890’s, just like the time period and place the book described. All the other screen adaptations have been in the US at the time of the film adaptation being made.

Hopefully, in this version, the HMS {I always forget the name} gets its just due on the screen. Be nice if the poison gas along with the ‘heat ray’ made an appearance too.

Let me guess. In this version the heroes are all women or non whites, and all the white males are useless.

I crack up every time I see the scene where Gene Barry shows up at the “meteor” site, and all the townies hushed mumbling in the background “oh, he’s a SCIENTIST!” and the complete awe when they see the Geiger Counter...

And the sound of the Martian death rays from the ships was - and still is to this old grown-up kid - absolute awesomeness...

I keep holding out hope that somebody will do Hammer’s Slammers or the Honor Harrington series. Honor Harrington could be a multi-generational franchise if done properly.

The Martians were defeated, because they were anti-vaxers.

Are you kidding? Nobody had guns except the crazy Tim Robbins character. Even in the Northeast corridor, there are boatloads of guns, and no one in the movie was even hinted at having one to fight the Elleance. That fact alone makes it a very unrealistic film. The special-effects were good, but I expect that of any science-fiction movie at this point in time.

The sound effects of the Martian war machines’ heat ray were created from three electric guitars played backward. Still, one of the best sound effects ever!

As a kid, on Creature Double Feature, I remember seeing that back to back with others like “The Thing”, “The Creature From the Black Lagoon”, “The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms”, “Them!”, “The Deadly Mantis”... and a host of others, including the Japanese “Godzilla” stuff that cracked me up.

Great old “Monster Movies”... from a better day and time.

HMS {I always forget the name}

HMS Thunder Child. I think she takes out three of the Tripods before sinking.
