Ye olde Blue Screen of Death is back – this time, a bad Symantec update is to blame

The wrong kind of intrusion protection

Symantec has acknowledged an issue with an update to its Endpoint Protection Client that causes a Windows kernel exception after users this morning came down with a mild case of Blue Screen of Death.

A Reg reader who got in touch about the problem confirmed "multiple" businesses running Symantec were getting hit with the BSOD stick.

According to the support note TECH256643:

When run LiveUpdate, Endpoint Protection Client gets a Blue Screen Of Death (BSOD) indicates IDSvix86.sys/IDSvia64.sys is the cause of the exception BAD_POOL_CALLER (c2) or KERNEL_MODE_HEAP_CORRUPTION (13A).

When BSOD happens, Intrusion Prevention signature version is 2019/10/14 r61.

Users took to Twitter to report the issue.

Users tweeting about BSOD issues with Symantec's security software

The solution, presuming you can persuade Windows to boot successfully, is either to run a further update to get release R62 of the bad Intrusion Protection signature, or roll back to an earlier one.

Symantec said it was aware of the issue and would update the support doc "when new information becomes available".

It is not yet clear which versions of Windows are affected.

Thanks to Reg reader Tarjei Utnes for the tip. ®

Most of the major problems I have run into in recent years come from Symantec.

Back in the early 80's, Peter Norton was my hero -- his Utilities saved the day more times than I can count. When Norton sold the Norton name and product line to Symantec, it went straight into the crapper and became just another turd circling the drain.

Back in the late 80's, McAfee was a good package. After John McAfee sold the McAfee name and product line to Network Associates, it went straight into the crapper and followed Norton.

Do we see a pattern here? :-)

Something else must be going on. Microsoft does not own McAfee. They have their own product, Windows Defender.

That's the thing about Macs. They cost more initially but the value stays higher and they just keep working. I've got 10-year-old Macs that are still in production work, albeit with older versions of the OS because their hardware can't support the newer versions.

It is disturbing that any post Windows NT 3rd party software can crash the OS. I have seen OS crashes in Linux and MacOS as well. Thew sandboxing cannot be 100%.

Symantec still owes me 20 bucks for a rebate they refused to honor.

I’ve used Norton Utilities since the late 90s, and now Symantec since they bought out Norton, and have never had any kind of a problem. Norton 360’s saved my 2009 HP Compaq 6000 Pro Microtower many times.

An op system that allows a program running under it to crash the op system is a poorly designed op system.

McAfee is one of the worst products out there.

It doesn’t do much except eat resources.

My cabled internet connection “drops” all the time, for no damn good reason.

Sometimes, I have to unplug/plug and it fixes it, other times a total reboot.

There are infinite pop-up ads happening in the lower right corner of my screen, no matter where I am, and I have no idea where they’re coming from or how to turn them off.

MalWareBytes says nothing is amiss.

I loathe and despise this OS with the passionate intensity of a thousand white-hot suns.

I uninstalled the factory trial that came with the laptop and it STILL nags me to upgrade/renew/whatever.

Can’t find where to kill it with fire, or I would.
