Bring back memories of gas lines during the Carter years.

“It wiuld have been funnier if there was a blackout.”

Even funnier if it was caused by an overload on the system due to too many plug-ins charging at the same time.

Good thing terrorists have no interest in targeting our power grid

Elon Musk may have to reverse position on the Space Based Solar Power Satellite tasked with beaming power to the Earth’s surface.

The Tesla vehicle could have an accessory charging system optimized for narrow-band optical input, perhaps illuminated by at least a hundred kilowatt laser. This would provide real world practice in targeting a moving object while providing a useful service.

In libtard world, the power never turns off. That would make their perfect plans, you know, not work.

It takes about an hour to charge a Tesla completely with one of these super chargers. Who wants to wait that long?

The Model 3 and the newest Model S and X are capable of charging much faster at version 3 superchargers. Tesla just started deploying them this year, so there aren't many around yet. For practical purposes a full charge really means 80% of battery capacity. When the battery is near empty on the newer cars, it capable of charging up to ~15 miles per minute. At around ~50% capacity the charging rate begins to slow. So if you have a 300 mile battery, it can charge to ~150 miles in 10 minutes or so, but take ~30 minutes to get to ~240 miles assuming ideal driving conditions. The new version 3 superchargers don't share power with other charging so stall, so there should be no delay once hooked up..

We have them now but the generators are incorporated into the design of the car. They are called hybrids.

Tesla showed of the concepts of swappable batteries several years ago, I believe to earn some subsidy.

The problem in reality is this. You have a brand spanking new car. Are you going to swap your brand new battery for one of unknown age or condition?

I’m not. Heck, I’m very particular about which propane tank I get when exchanged. Am I not going to care when we are talking about a battery pack that costs several thousand dollars?

"How long before we start seeing electric cars with portable generators tied to their luggage racks?!"

Never. Portable generators have no where near the capability of charging EVs, nor does the EV have the space to safely carry the 20 gallons or so of gasoline that it would take to fully charge the vehicle.

"a portable charger to plug in at your destination."

There is not enough grid generation nor grid distribution capacity for that. If everyone needed to charge their "green" electric cars, the electrical generation and distribution capacity in the US would need to DOUBLE. So would your electric bill. but that would more than double in order to pay for the new power lines and generating plants - and the coal mines to keep the lights on.

How about interchangeable charged batteries that slip in and out in seconds? Sounds involved though.

The batteries cost $thousands. I can see it happening for fleet vehicles where the owner has multiple service stations.

For individual vehicles, are YOU going to swap out YOUR very-expensive battery for one of unknown quality at a service area?
