Coast Guard Searching for Tour Helicopter With 7 Passengers Missing in Hawaii
KTLA ^ | 12/27/2019

The owner of the helicopter company reached out to the Joint Rescue Coordination Center in Honolulu when the aircraft didn’t return from a tour of the Napali coast, the Coast Guard previously said. One pilot and six passengers were on the helicopter and two of those passengers are believed to be minors.

The last communication came around 4:40 p.m. local time, Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Sara Muir told CNN Friday, about 40 minutes before the helicopter was due to return. At that time it was leaving Waimeia Canyon, Muir said.

Muir identified the helicopter company as Safari Helicopters. When reached by CNN, Safari Helicopters confirmed its helicopter was missing but wouldn’t provide additional details.

The aircraft is equipped with an electronic locator, Muir said, but officials haven’t received any signal from it.

These helicopter tours are very popular, I’ve been on one on the Big Island. These things are flying all hours...

Mistakes happen, bad luck, accidents.

RIP to the victims and may their families find some peace.

How many of them had information that would have led to Hillary Clinton's arrest?

Or, given that I've read that both Nazi Pelousy and 0moeba are out in Hawaii, information that would lead to *their* arrests?

We’re on Maui right now with the kids and grandkids.I told my daughter to scratch any helicopter tours off their bucket list. They’re sticking to the water..snorkeling.

IIRC, a cameraman or stuntman died in an unscripted MPI helicopter crash.

My very first helicopter ride had just the pilot. Back in the 1960s, it was a promotion for some department store.

I may have been about 10, if that.

Granted, it was very short, basically up and down, but it happened.

Also took the then-wife on a helicopter tour up a glacier in NZ.

No ELT is a good sign, they may have had a hard landing...but are still alive.

Company has a good record and flies a solid system - the ASTAR B2 aircraft with 1D1 Turbomeca engines

Too bad... lost opportunity.

the helicopter ride wife and I took in 77 from Hana Ranch to Haleakala Crater was awesome. Followed the coast for a bit, then over the jungle...pilot had to have been a WO in Viet Nam, nap of earth through the canyons/rifts, then climbed the side of the crater through the early morning cloud cover at the rim, casting two rainbow rings, top and bottom, broke through the cloud cover and Whoa Nelly! the entire crater suddenly appeared in view. Better than the best roller coaster view. Talk about a panoramic view. Just awesome. Pure movie scenario. Glad we took the opportunity.

One of the most awesome experiences of our lives, to fly tour that coast and rush up the Kauai Grand Canyon and over the ridge to the music from “Superman’

And to hover inside the volcano under cloud cover with hundreds of waterfalls

So sorry for the poor souls onboard

"Unless life is on the line or it’s a case of military necessity, getting on a helicopter is an act so idiotic as to approach evil."

I am thankful my daughter no longer is a flight nurse for a commercial medical helicopter service. She was hired as part of a group that replaced a crew that perished in a crash. Although the company seemed committed to maintenance and safety training, she survived two hard autorotation landings. What scares me now is that she has the itch to go back.

There is a MPI scene that I have never been able to find again where the helicopter was taking leaves off of trees with its blades as it took off down a narrow street. I’m thinking that was an unintentional near miss.

Not a lot of good landing spots up there on the island. Ocean or steep canyons.

It's a tour of Kauai that includes Waimea Canyon

I figured that. I prefer seeing it from the ground and by boat myself.

They found the wreck a ways north of Hanapepe. It would appear the helo was on the way back when it went down.

No survivors.

There are more deaths from sharks in Hawaii than from helicopter crashes.

Snorkel on....
