Texas woman apparently killed by celebratory New Year’s gunfire
NY Post ^ | 01/01/2019 | Amanda Woods

Philippa Ashford, 61, was celebrating with her loved ones just after midnight in a cul-de-sac of Houston’s Laurel Oaks neighborhood — where family and friends were shooting off fireworks — when she suddenly clutched her body and said, “I think I’ve been shot,”

Authorities went from house to house searching for shell casings and trying to find out where the gunfire came from.

The incident came after Houston authorities had warned locals not to fire their guns during New Year’s celebrations.

Another man was also shot in the wrist just after midnight in Houston by celebratory gunfire, while he was outside with his roommate, KHOU reported.

It's interesting that in many cities police were required to fire a warning shot in the air before shooting somebody that was running away. Now, of course, things are different. They can't just shoot someone for running away anyhow - plus they finally realized what comes up must come down.

If only drunk people on New Years could realize it.

It's not a cultural thing, even educated honkies take part in that stupidity.

Fireworks should be banned from sale everywhere since they have no use other than produce loud noises that most neighbors find annoying and send many pets into conniptions.........

While it is all too obvious that there are many terminally stupid Americans (Democrats especially), the insane act of firing a gun into the air in celebration has not, IMHO, been a tradition here, north of the Rio Grande. So is this yet another job for immigrants to do that normal citizens won’t do?

Sympathies and prayers for the family and friends. R.I.P.!

My neighborhood's NYE rocket battle came to sudden halt shortly after the stroke of 12 due to rain. I was not unhappy about the development. They usually go until about 2 am.

Why I won’t go outside when they’re shooting off crap. I couldn’t tell if it was fireworks or gunshots or both. RIP.

The problem is not spent bullets that fall from a height, but bullets that are fired at a shallow angle and hit a victim with substantial velocity. For some people, “celebratory gunfire” involves firing a gun in the direction of a neighbor’s house.

Never heard gunfire in Southern California on NYE back in the 50’s and 60’s.

But by the early 80’s it was very prevalent.

Wonder what demographic coincidence happened during that period?

Looks like she lived in a nice neighborhood too. Freakin’ idiots. I hope they find the a$$hole responsible and send him to prison for a long, long time.

I don’t get this? I’ve never known anyone who did “celebratory gunfire” and I’ve known gun owners and lived with guns my whole life?

Everything! Without the fireworks the gunshots could possibly be traced to their source..........

Thus fireworks or other shooting off guns being a perfect cover for those deliberately wanting to do what you just said.

Then you are 100% correct.

My statement was relevant to the use of fireworks. Had there been no fireworks being fired off in that area then the individual who was shooting a firearm into the air could more easily be discovered..........

Is that more easy for you to understand?.....thanks
