Philippa Ashford, 61, was celebrating with her loved ones just after midnight in a cul-de-sac of Houstons Laurel Oaks neighborhood where family and friends were shooting off fireworks when she suddenly clutched her body and said, I think Ive been shot,
Authorities went from house to house searching for shell casings and trying to find out where the gunfire came from.
The incident came after Houston authorities had warned locals not to fire their guns during New Years celebrations.
Another man was also shot in the wrist just after midnight in Houston by celebratory gunfire, while he was outside with his roommate, KHOU reported.

But what goes up...is at a very high velocity...what comes down is not.
Im a home inspector and theres 2 nearby towns where for the next couple of months, noting bullets lodged in roof coverings will occur with great regularity.
Same here.
All of my friends are hunters, trap shooters, target shooters and never have even heard of anyone thinking that shooting a live round up into the sky is a good idea.
I've seen pix of some people doing it, but I've never understood why?
Yeah this is a third world practice. Inshallah
Exactly.
If it goes up at over 70 degrees from horizontal, the terminal velocity is unlikely to be enough to be fatal.
If shotguns with bird shot are fired into the air, the shot will bounce off of clothing as it falls.
Bullets at terminal velocity can cause damage if they hit young children or frail adults in the head, or hit the eyes.
If the shots are under 70 degrees from horizontal, there may be sufficient retained velocity (not terminal falling velocity, to be much more dangerous.
Quite likely. I used to live in a small town in southern New Mexico, and there were definitely locals who fired guns in the air. Friend of mine found a hole in the hood of his pickup, after one night of "celebratory" gun fire. He said it was the size of a 12 gauge slug (glad it hit his truck, and not him or his wife)...
Highland Park, CA, near downtown Los Angeles, has numerous gunfires on NYE. It was a nice area until third world punks moved in: car alarms, graffiti, gunfire, and helicopters looking for criminals. Senator Ted Kennedy is probably and justly suffering from despair right now in a pit that no one wishes to go to. Prayers for the soul of Philippa in Texas.
At my house, after 2 of the 3 kids broke their spoons, we switched over to sticks!
Thats not what u said-u said they should be banned everywhere-which means where I live or in the country. Nice try yourself.
Fireworks should be banned from sale everywhere is what you said. You want to ban things I want to do on my property for my amusement. Youre no different than a liberal.
Firing guns in the air is a time-honored tradition in New Orleans, and IIRC several random innocents have died as a result over the years, with little reduction in the activity despite public pleas.
Thousands of Katrina evacuees landed in Houston & never left. So that could be it.
I love when there are fireworks around me. Dogs care less.
Arizona tried to do away with celebratory gunfire via Shannon’s law. Unfortunately, in the PC atmosphere of the time they did away with protecting your pets from predators, accidenral discharges, or any other discharge except for self defense. Felonies.
Don’t be like illannoy....fireworks banned.
Exactly. At least in CA, it is a Mexican thing.
Exactly. Let freedom ring.
I saw this on myth busters where they tested this and the only way they could make it lethal was to fire at an angle of less than 45 degrees so it hits you at an angle where there is still a lot of energy from the gun firing.
Maybe wouldn’t kill you but wouldn’t want to get hit by it
Everything! Without the fireworks the gunshots could possibly be traced to their source..........
uh, yeah, right ...
