Joaquin Phoenix Wins Best Actor Golden Globe Over Adam Driver as Oscar Battle Heats Up
IndieWire ^ | January 5th, 2020 | Zack Sharf

Joaquin Phoenix has now won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama thanks to his critically acclaimed performance in Todd Phillips’ revisionist comic book movie “Joker.” Believe it or not, the Golden Globe victory is Phoenix’s first major Best Actor win of the 2019-20 awards season outside of smaller critics’ groups. The majority of precursor Best Actor prizes this season have been awarded to Adam Driver of “Marriage Story” or Adam Sandler of “Uncut Gems.” Phoenix was nominated for the Golden Globe awards opposite Driver in “Marriage Story,” Christian Bale in “Ford v. Ferrari,” Jonathan Pryce in “The Two Popes,” and Antonio Banderas in “Pain and Glory.”

Phoenix’s victory for “Joker” gives the actor his second Golden Globe award after taking home the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture Comedy or Musical in 2006 for “Walk the Line,” in which he played Johnny Cash. Phoenix has received additional Golden Globe nominations for his performances in “Gladiator,” “The Master,” “Her,” and “Inherent Vice.”

Frankly I'm surprised any other actors were even considered.

The man's a genius actor. And his performance in Joker is his best ever.

If I was a competing actor I would be ashamed to even be nominated in the same breath as this guy.

No thanks although Ford vs Ferrari looks interesting.

Great opportunity for over acting, and formidably fulfilled.
I only got a fraction of the way through the film.

Meaningless Hollywood self-congratulation.

“I only got a fraction of the way through the film.”

Many people had a deep, emotional reaction to the film.

The childhood scenes were impacting.

he was a bit strange on stage accepting, tho. Lot of head and face rubbing. Maybe he hasn’t quite gotten the character of joker out of his head.

Best part of the GG was Ricky at the beginning telling the actors they didn’t know a damn thing about the real world and to accept their award, thank their God and get the (censored) off the stage. Which, for the most part, actually worked!

I’ve never seen acting on the level of Phoenix’s in Joker.

That movie blew me away.

Most of what comes out of Hollywood is tripe.

This film is high art.

Did you see his strange acceptance speech tonight?
I don’t know if he was acting.

Especially because he just could not play himself.

John Wayne always played himself, as does Jack Nicholson, DeNiro, Tom Hanks and so many others.

In this case a man became somebody else. Literally and figuratively. And convincingly.

Somebody who never before existed.

OK, who should I be rooting for here, or should they both just go fornicate themselves?

I very much wanted to but did not like anything about The Joker. Seemed to be made on the cheap.

I couldn't name ONE memorable scene or line of dialog that will have people reminiscing about it 10 years from now?

The murder scene in his apartment is the most intense thing I’ve ever seen on film.

Visceral.
