If you choose to believe the stories his family were raised in some sort of cult. No doubt, that being in the cult did not do the man any favors psychologically.

I’m glad he won, Phoenix was spectacular.
What I have absolutely zero interest in are dramas about extremely ordinary people having extremely ordinary problems/family dramas, etc.. That's what real-life is for. Watching something like the emotional drama of some fictional couple's marriage dissolving...no thanks.

Joker is the opposite of that.
I agree he is masterful in this role...and no, not a sociopath as was stated earlier, he is dead on psychopath here. He’s extremely talented, and likely extremely disturbed as a person.
But for me, by far the more entertaining movie this year was Tarantino’s Once upon a time in Hollywood. I think if Clint Eastwood was twisted (in a good way) enough he could have made this movie.
To me...if they're ordinary people, why would I want to watch? I see and interact with ordinary people every day.
I haven’t seen Hollywood yet, but I’m a huge Tarantino fan, so I’ll see it soon enough.
My favorite from him is Inglorious Basturds.
Phoenix is a lot more level headed than most people might expect. He has a lot of insight, he’s lead an interesting life. I do not think Phoenix is a group thinker.
Phoenix was doped up and unintelligible in his acceptance speech.
He couldn’t even hold up the trophy. He set it down by his feet.
I hope he’s still alive by March, when the Academy Awards take place.

Once upon a time is easily Tarantino’s most intricate film, very different in many ways from what you’ve seen before, his comedy is evolving and maturing. I saw the Joker and thought best picture for sure until I saw the Tarantino movie. Now that one is my favorite, though like everyone else I haven’t seen 1917 yet.

The man's a genius actor. And his performance in Joker is his best ever.
My guess is that there is a prejudice against movies based on comic books amongst the people that vote on these awards.
Back in the early days of movies it was considered a forgone conclusion that no one was ever going to get an Oscar for acting in a cowboy film

I rented “once upon a time in hollywood” Glad I didnt pay movie prices. IMHO Brad pitt stole the show. Leonardo was/is dead weight. it was an hour and half of * yawn* srpinkled with a few good moments aand a surprise sending. It was very well made. just not a good Tarantino type film. Without pitt I would have hated the film.

I was surprised how much I liked that movie. I only watched it because it got such good reviews and happened to become available on one of the premier cable channel I was getting at the time. Good enough to watch again, and there are very few movies I can say that about.
I’ll probably watch Joker eventually. But I have to be in the right frame of mind to watch a movie like that. For the most part, I don’t care for a movie in which there are no characters with redeeming values. However, I can’t imagine anyone doing Joker better than Heath Ledger. I’d watch Phoenix’ just to be able to compare the two.

I just watched Gervais' opening. Awesome, simply awesome. He put those self-important a**holes right where they belong.
