I have windows 7. When windows 10 came out I tried to upgrade, but my PC is not compatible. Maybe Linux would work, but I’m not familiar with it. Not all PC’s can be upgraded to windows 10.

And the more you use it the better it gets. I am still running into stuff two years later that are cool as heck. :)

Did you find the built in “help chat” channel yet? I thought that was a fantastic idea and feature! Blew me away when I first clicked on it, can’t get much better OS support than that!

It’s been a long time but if my memory serves correctly, Microsoft allows only 1 level upgrade at a time.

But you can always down load the assistant I described and it will tell you if your current version is upgradable.

If not you may be stuck with buying a windows 7 license and upgrade to it first.

Heads up about the Zorin, They are selling versions of that and I am not so sure they are legally supposed to. Just as others cannot due to the licensing of the Linux Kernel they are using. And everything they have in it is already available open source. The version they are selling below is a Mint cinnamon bundled software package with a different window dressing.

Only thing I really trust is my shadow. I did trust my dad completely but he is no longer living. My mom had favorites lol.

...this thread is for those who are procrastinating (as I was) about switching from 7 to 10. Linux switch is another issue.

The switch to Linux is most definitely one of the options for those who are procrastinating about what to do about the end of Windows 7 support.

There are maybe eight computing devices in my house. Some are running 7 and some are now running 10. After having looked at 10 and having read up on the fundamental differences between 7 and 10, I determined that 10 is NOT the way I want to go with my primary devices, all of which are on Windows 7.

I had been dreading the prospect of having to learn how to build my own OS from all of the building blocks available from Linux, until Freeper Openurmind turned me on to the new generation of Linux versions, which are pre-built, and basically install like any Windows operating system.

We installed Linux Mint (Cinnamon) on one of my older laptops, side by side with the existing Windows 7 system. I've got to tell you, the install is smooth and painless. Just follow the prompts and in very little time you'll have a new operating system on your computer that has about 80% similarity to your Microsoft system. You can even make it look exactly like Windows 7 if you wish.

I'd advise anyone facing this dilemma to check out videos on YouTube to see what Linux looks like, and what the advantages are (there are many).

OK. I believe you entropy12. I've put this off long enough, but if, as you say, the Classic Shell means this ol' guy doesn't have to learn a bunch of "new stuff" I'm going to make the switch today!

Any last second pointers/advice? The only difference is I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium on a Dell Inspiron 3847 64-bit system. Thanks, entropy12!

My Win 7 update 2 days ago crashed my laptop and none of the advanced recovery features will reboot the computer.

Having little experience with this, should I call Microsoft Help to reboot and then upgrade to W10? Does Microsoft provide that kind of support?

Use your system DVD or USB stick to install fresh copy of Windows. Because if Recovery is not working, your Windows Disk Operating system is badly corrupted.

Windows 10, especially the latest 1809 or later, is a fantastic operating system. Leaps and bounds better than Windows 7 and Windows 8. It’s been 10 years, time to upgrade people. Or Linux or Mac OS if you want, you do you. But please let Windows 7 die, it’s time.

I wish I could, what if that is unavailable? Not sure if it is lost, misplaced or never received.

Biggest problem is getting photos from I phone and camera onto the computer.

I think I see your problem here. It's the "I" before phone. We're an Android family (Samsung to be precise) and I have NEVER experienced problems transferring files from phones to computers and back using nothing more than Windows Explorer. I was even able to use Win Explorer the other night to move files on my wife's phone from her phone storage to her card storage.

And that's using computers running Win 7, 8.1 when I had it and now 10. Different versions, same results.

The Upgrade Assistant will automatically find your existing key, and proceed with the upgrade to Windows 10 and install a brand new key for you.

If you wish to know what is your key, search for and down load a WINDOWSKEYFINDER program. Those are free and simple to use.
