Use another working computer to make a bootable USB using the program Download Assistant from Microsoft as described in my original post.

Not every win7 machine has the correct guts to swap to win10. My darling’s hp 20 inch one piece touchscreen is one of those.
So, we are looking.
QUESTION: Can a win7 printer work with win10?
The graphics card can be one problem, RAM memory size could be other. I upgraded my laptop by adding memory module which was not expensive. Dunno cost of buying a new graphics card.
Best option for you is to download the Assistant program I described in my original post, and let it tell you if your computer is up-to-snuff for Windows 10.
“...then I physically destroy the hard drive....”
For item 5, do you recommend a back-up on to a USB before having the Assistant do everything, just in case? If so, what exactly should get backed up (i.e. just Win 7, or also all of my data)?
Thanks for answering, and also for the advice/instructions in your post. I had pretty much forgotten about the need to upgrade, but with support ending it is pretty much essential (I use 7 on my 2011 work computer, including the internet, and don’t relish the idea of buying a new computer just yet).
You just need a anti virus and anti spyware program on Windows 7. The time to move is when the web browswers no longer support Windows 7.
Norton 360 has anti-virus and MalwareBytes are both full-working, paid-for editions, and work great. Thanks to both, I’ve never had any intrusions or attacks.
Most of the web browsers have archived copies of each edition, and I can continue w/ Opera, Pale Moon and Chrome, for the foreseeable future.
Its been out the window
Nope. Hillary should have come to me for advice (not that I would have given her any other than to stick it in her butt).
I regularly burn brush on my property (we have several acres with a lot of trees). Whenever I have an old hard drive that I need to get rid of I toss it into the burn pile right before I light it.
I have been doing this for over 20 years and I guarantee that not even the NSA can retrieve any data out of the small lumps of melted aluminum that I rake out of the ashes the next day.
Her pay by the hour tech shop said the guts were inadequate
BOOKbump
With all that’s going on here, I haven’t had much time to spend with Mint. But as soon as I get thru some of this medical stuff, I will get back into it.
I have a four year old Acer M1-601 Windows 10 PC that I was not using and had in a box in my closet for a couple of years. I recently tried to turn it on so I could wipe any data on it and give it to one of my grandkids, but it would not boot because an OS file is corrupted.
So I tried creating a boot disk from another Windows 10 PC, but it would not work because it was not the same Windows edition. I have no way to figure out what Windows edition is on the old PC (I suspect it is Windows 10 Home, but don't know what build or even whether it is 64-bit or 32-bit), because it won't boot ...
Bump for later.
I don’t really care about support ending. I prefer 7.
My Windows-10 looks and works just like Windows-7!
Like I said before, if my wife had upgraded to W-10 when I was sleeping, after waking up I would think I am still on WIndows-7.
And that was the exact reason why I never upgraded all my PC’s to W-10. I have one PC which came with W-10 installed, and I do not wish to learn a new system. Using W-7 years for almost a decade, I am familiar so why change.
The procedure I described in original post makes the W-10 look very very close to W-7, with a Start Menu and all, so I am feeling happy.
If your computer should boot up from a USB -— but you have to change sequence of booting first through BIOS setting.. If hard disk is the first device set up for booting, the USB won’t help you.

The bootable USB with Windows system on it does NOT have to be the same edition of Windows sitting on your hard disk.
