Switch from Windows-7 to Windows-10 the easy way..
1/7/2020 | Self

I am familiar with Windows 7 and do not like Windows 10 shell, but I just switched to 10, and made it look just like 7. So now I can get Microsoft update support for many years, while the support for Windows 7 stops on January 14, 2020 making it more vulnerable to hacking after that date. The process was smooth and I like the results so far.

I like Windows 7, but with support ending from Microsoft on Jan 14, 2020 decided to try FREE upgrade to Windows 10. It was not difficult process, just takes an hour or 2 depending on your computer speed.

Good news is, I got the free upgrade and Microsoft even furnished a new Key for the Windows 10. My Windows 7 (W7) was the Professional version duly licensed and activated. My new Windows 10 (W10) is also Professional version. All this happened automatically. I think the switch should be done before Jan 14th. My W10 password is same as it was for W7.

So instead of the youtube video with bad sound and hard to understand accent of the speaker, here is step by step guide to go from W7 to W10. The upgrade process kept all my existing programs and have all the Desktop icons back from W7. I installed the Classic Shell so everything looks just like WIndows 7, while actually running Windows 10. So there is nothing new to learn about W10 if you don't wish to. If someone had done this switch during my sleep, I would think I am running W7.

Disclaimer: These steps below worked great for me, but obviously I can not guarantee these will work for you.

1. Do a search (Google or other) for "Windows 10 Update Assistant" Click on the "Support.Microsoft.com" web site 2. Click "download the Update Assistant" 3. Click "Download tool now" "MediaCreationTool" file will show up in your download folder. 3a Do the same search for "Classic Shell.net" That file will be executed laterc after Windows 10 switch has completed. Double click on it. Then click "Run". 4. A window will popup saying "Getting a few things ready" Click on "Accept" license terms. "Getting a few things ready" will continue. 5. Now you have a choice to make.. a. Upgrade this PC now b. Create installation media (USB, DVD, or ISO file) Select option a. 6. From here on just follow instructions. Your PC will reboot several times during this process, and if you have a system password, you will need to enter it for each reboot. 7. After Upgrade to W10 is completed, execute the "Classic shell" file you had downloaded. 8. You will get a new Windows 10 License Key automatically Run a Key locater program and make a note of your new Key for future use. 9. W10 Updates will be done automatcally at this point. You can check for updates by typing "updates" in search box. Search box is at same location as in W7.

Main thing I didn’t like about 10 was pushing Paint 3D and some other programs. Had to go back and find Paint, add it to my desktop, etc. These programs are still there, just not visible.

They can have my Windows 3.11 when they pry it from my cold, dead laptop...

My daughter gave me a laptop that runs on Linux, and I have to say I’m liking it more and more each day.

Try Linux (maybe Zorin). Zorin is Windows-like, and will do everything except play some popular computer games; and Amazon won’t let its prime movies be adapted to linux.

Otherwise, basically, it is easy to use and NOT Windows 10 with all its problems.

I was thinking the same until I used the upgrade assistant and classic shell. Now my new Windows 10 looks almost same as Windows 7.

I have lots of my own written software written in dBase system and it may not run on Linux. But when I have some free time I may give Linux a look.

What are some of the Windows 10 problems you mention?
Probably no worse than Windows 7.

Remember this thread is for those who are procrastinating (as I was) about switching from 7 to 10.

Linux switch is another issue.

I was very satisfied with Windows 7, worked like a charm. I was foolish enough to follow the hype and got Windows 10. For me its a disaster.Biggest problem is getting photos from I phone and camera onto the computer.

When I want to transfer photo files from my Android phone to computer, I start by clicking on “Settings”, then “Connect to PC” and setup for file transfer.

Then connect to computer with the cable, and use Windows Explorer to transfer files, delete files etc on either device.

Yes, every file I had under my personal Folders are untouched.

Create your own folder on the computer and store all your personal files (photo’s, documents etc) in sub-folders inside your main personal folder. That way WIndows will leave everything alone in your personal folders.

Windows 7 was released over ten years ago. It is time to let go.

I finally took the plunge and converted my remaining Windows 7 PCs to Windows 10 about 3 years ago. I have not had any problems.

Sure, sometimes I miss MS-DOS. It never crashed and the only software that I needed was Lotus 123 and WordPerfect 5.1. It was a pain though to reload the software from 5.25” floppy disks every time I wanted to use it.
